I've replied to him now but should I have done anything better/differently? I've probably missed seeing him now but I kind of don't think it's my problem if he doesn't want to use a phone.

You can only do what you can do, good simple communication and there comes a point where you need your time off or for whatever else you do including sleeping.

Also a booking only happens when it happens, a great thing I learned some years ago.
