Yeah no I totally agree, if a guy phoned me up telling me he was on tag then I would naturally be feeling anxious regardless of how nice he came across on the phone. In this case...at least he wasn't a dick about you refusing to see him at his place as I get loads of guys turn on me if I say no to something x
