Working from Home
« on: 25 May 2010, 07:52:43 pm »
I've been wrestling with a dilemma recently, and I'm hoping you ladies can share your experiences and help me decide!

At the moment I rent two flats, the one I've lived in for a good few years, and for the last couple of months a city centre flat I offer incalls from. The tennancy on my home flat is up shortly, and I'm considering moving into my incall flat. I sleep here most nights, only going home for one or two nights a week. The flat has a large living area which clients don't need to use, so I could have my private space here. But I love my home, and as a location that's where I'd choose to live, it's just not suitable for incalls.

There are two big advantages to this plan - not having to pay two sets of bills, and the convenience of being here whenever a booking comes in. It's also better for outcalls, most of which are to city centre hotels.

On the other hand, will I be tempted to be available 7 days per week, just because I'm home? And what if someone turns nasty or the neighbours complain? It'd be a lot easier to pack up and move a working flat than my home! There's also the security of having a cheap flat in a good area - is it worth giving that up, what if in a couple of months I decide I don't want to escort anymore? (Not likely, but I can't read the future!)

I really don't know what to do for the best. When I'm at my incall I think "Yeah! Move in here! It'll be so much better!" ... then I go home and think "Noooo! You can't give up this! You love it here!"

Any advice?

Hi,

I have worked from home & have found many pros & con's.

I agree that paying two rents is a huge waste of money, but then again you can argue that the safety factor is worth every penny. So when I worked from home I had a security system & CCTV in my entrance lobby, I didn't have it on the outside door so the neighbours didn't get suspicious. Regarding neighbours I found that if you listen out for them you soon get to know their routine with coming & going. You can if you want offer in-calls only when you know that they are out & offer outcalls when you know that they are in. But if you don't take outrageous amounts of in-calls & are very discreet with what you do, & with you being based in London I wouldn't worry too much.

When I worked from home only the biggest lesson I learnt was keeping balance between work & rest, you have to maintain it. Or you will burn yourself out or just go crazy! Having freedom to work over time like any other job is one thing but being on tap is another. Look after your self, money isn't every thing!

Personal space is a must, so if you have a room that is a palace to rest & be sloppy is a good thing, especially when the rest of the place is like a show room.

I think you have a good thing going for you here, but you should sit & plan it, put all the what ifs down on paper, &  come up with points/plans or just pros & cons. That is what I do & it helps me :)

Let us know what you decide Harlow x

Thanks Harlow!

I agree I'd have to be strict with myself about having time off, even if I'm just mooching round at home - that's when I think I'd be tempted to switch my phone on, because I'm not doing anything else. But time off is important, even totally unproductive lying on the couch watching telly time off!

The block of flats my incall is in is quite busy, so it's easy to be anonymous. I aim to do 2 or 3 bookings per day, but in reality it's more like 1 or 2, and I switch my phone off at 11 so there aren't gentlemen coming and going all night. The bedroom is also on a corner, so I don't have a neighbour on that side, only above and below where the action is! I'm in Leeds, not London btw  ;)

The reasons for moving into my incall are all good, immediate reasons, while the reasons for keeping things as they are are all 'what if'...

What if the neighbours do work out what I do and complain?
What if a client turns nasty or stalkerish?
What if I decide to stop escorting?

 ???

And, there's no bath  :o

I work from home at the moment, I did have somewhere separate before.

I find most neighbours are at work when I get most of my incalls anyway.  I only use one room with clients and never invite them into any other room.

When you go on holiday be careful not to say that you are on holiday just say your having some time off, if clients ask you rent your place with another girl or something similar. Leave tv/radio on in the other room just so they can hear it when they come in the door, they will think someone else is in even if they are not.

No one has visited my place without calling first, I would not answer anyway.  If someone turned nasty I would just call the police - I have never had a problem.

If your renting you can always move somewhere else.

Hi,

Sorry about the London thing, it was very late when I read your post :) But I still think the same knowing that you are in Leeds, as it is one on the biggest Cities in the UK.

I really understand your worries only to well. The problem with me was my concerns soon turned to paranoia & stopped me working for a while. Now you know your self better then anyone & if you fell like you can get paranoid easily, then I would really think hard before making any decisions.

I have no choice at the moment but to do out calls but I plan to hire rooms/flats & hotel rooms on & off throughout the month to do out calls. I know as soon as I have the dosh & the ability to get a flat to work from I will. But this time round I will make sure that I work away from that flat every 4-6 weeks. That I feel will give the neighbour a rest & I a change of scenery. Maybe that kinda thing might work for you too?

A little update...

I have decided... not to decide just yet  ::)

I'm still swinging wildly between the two options, they both seem good. So I'm going to sign another six month agreement on my home flat, go all out on my advertising in that time and review the situation when that agreement is up.

At the moment I'm managing to pay for both flats, put money aside for tax and into my pension, but there's not much left for anything else. Not ideal, I'm meant to be saving to buy somewhere! However, if I can get to the point where I'm getting three or four bookings as average, rather than the one or two I get at the moment, then I can easily afford the luxury of two places and have money to save too. I might even be able to take an extra day off per week to spend at home  :D

So, I'm rewriting my site, I'll get new photos done, and go over all my ads... and if in six months I'm not doing better then I'll know I've tried my best but those clients just aren't there  :(

Thanks for all your help ladies x I'll report back in six months!

That sounds like a good plan Stephanie.  I'm glad you let us know what you decided (or not lol).  :)

I know nada about things like this but just off the top of my head is there no way you could actually buy the flat you love (not the incall one) through a private sale with your landlord?  I know you still need to get a mortgage and everything and the deposit is a big issue (tell me about it) but I've been seeing more and more mention of buying property without using estate agents and I reckon in a few years private buying and selling will be the norm cutting out all those pesky agents' fees.

Are you psychic Cherrylips  :o One of the reasons I'm reluctant to give up my flat is that I plan to ask the landlord if she's willing to sell! I have to get more saved up for a deposit first, It'll be another couple of years at least until I have enough.
