What do you tell people you do for a living?
« on: 22 June 2015, 07:54:28 am »
Good morning,

I have been escorting full time for about a month now after being part time for a while and then being made redundant.

The thing is that none of my family or friends know and I understand this is not uncommon, but after a few weeks of saying 'I'm taking a break from work' etc. they are now starting to ask more about what my plans are as they know I can't be a lady of leisure forever!

I have been vague saying I am 'setting up a business working from home' and am now thinking that I will invent some mystery client that I work for doing PA work so that I can justify not actively looking for work.

I want to keep it quite simple as I know how difficult it is to sustain a complicated lie for a long time and I am really interested to know how to do it.

 ;) :)

You're thinking along the right lines. Do you have any skills that you could say you use for doing private work? You could be doing private book keeping, or organising events, whatever. The more boring it sounds the more effective because less people are that interested in the detail.

Perhaps Market Research would cover you.

Then the days you are working can change according to when the company want you to work.

If anyone asks I would just say it is so boring you don't want to talk about it.  May give you time to figure out something else.

Also gives you reason for going touring.  ;)
Beauty is nothing to do with having a pretty face.
It is about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart,
And most importantly a beautiful soul.

Thanks for the ideas so far.

That is pretty much along the lines I was thinking.

I think I will say that I am a PA that is within my skill set and quite generic enough to not have to go into too many details.  Who knows, my fictional client may want to take me abroad on business some time?! Lol  :D :D :D

I need something to explain why I am unavailable during weekday afternoons and weekend evenings!!

Meetings. Progress meetings, strategy meetings. The more boring the better. Just base it on a business you know something about. I can talk about shipping and customs and excise till the cows come home, and peoples eyes glaze over in a couple of minutes.

Very true, my specialist area is Quality Management and no one really knows what that is so I can say anything and they would not know the difference! Although I think customs and excise trumps it! lol  :D

The tricky bit is when you find yourself talking to someone who also has some inside knowledge. But I make sure I'm always ready for that.

I was a project manager for a pharmaceutical company before becoming a full time lady of leisure, so just tell them that I am a contractor.

If you are going to use an occupation use something you have done before or say something like you are a temp for a recruitment agency doing secretarial.  That way it covers you being home a few days now and then.  Plus as a temp you can earn anywhere from ?10 - ?22 an hour if not more these days.

Cassiea

agree with PA - irregular hours, no office to visit and holidays :)
