Your thoughts on the current recession & it’s impact
« on: 18 June 2022, 11:30:57 pm »
…and how are you handling it / hedging against it so far?

With the crazily increasing pricing of, well, everything… and todays general economic climate, as well as some punters saying (even during bookings) how they plan to significantly cut their spending, what are your thoughts on the current recession? Have you noticed any effect on your business so far, has it gotten quieter, are you planning to perhaps tweak your rates?

Or would you say the profession we do is sort of “recession proof”?

It's really tough to say, because a lot of punters will have less free cash, and there may also be quite a few women driven into prostitution due to poverty. I have another job so am not reliant on escorting, but I would say:

1. Have professional marketing, e.g. your own website, and maybe one professional photo shoot, or at least some very good amateur ones. This may help sway a punter who's unsure who to give his money to that you're a professional, too. Check spelling and grammar in your profiles etc.

2. Be reliable and provide a good service. This will help you build a roster of regulars as well as maybe earn you a good reputation.

I just think anything you can do to reduce the risk-averse punter's qualms can only help.

There isn't a 'current recession'; the last one ran for two quarters in 2020 and predictions have been all over the place even in the last week. One good thread to look for some history is the start of Slow At The Minute which started around the time of the last lengthy recession which ran for five quarters (I think) over 2008-2009 :)

My experience then was that business was pretty good - I bought my flat in July 2008, and it was confirmed in various publications at the time that low level luxury spending usually kept up (bookies were another example given) because people couldn't afford bigger luxuries, so whilst a holiday to Hawaii might be off the table, £100 for a punt likely isn't. Obviously the industry changes like everything else, and things like location play a big part too.

As Kay says, the way to go is to keep your ads current and your service consistently good, which is good advice regardless of anything else :)

It's going to be tough, and I know for a fact it's going to drive more of us into prostitution. The only thing to do is keep grinding away at the mountain till things improve I suppose.

Okay, to narrow it down, whilst true it’s been ongoing since 2020, I meant the *current* energy, fuel and inflation crisis :-) and it’s impact on the punting behaviours and consequently our businesses.

Many thanks for everyone’s insight x

This is somewhat of a how long is a piece of string question - there are so many contributing factors in this ranging from how men prioritise visiting us, to their own financial means - some men’s finances have been hard hit by the the cost of living crisis, others are not affected at all. But it’s not even just this. Some will always make seeing us a priority, others will not (Like Amy said, while a holiday to Hawaii might be unaffordable, a punt for a few hundred pounds is not). Additionally, not all men punt at at the same rate - some men punt weekly, others just a few times a year, some what a 30 minute quickie, others want far longer appointments. In short, every man is different and wants different things, as are we too - one only has to look at the ‘slow at the minute, or just me’ thread to see that some are quiet, others are not.

The only grumbles a few clients have shared is the clear increase in hotel prices, (something touring escorts and those who use hotels to host incalls have commented on too). However, the clients I see enjoy staying in the best suites in the best hotels, and never pay for them out of their own pockets anyway as they’re always expensed through their businesses/work, so the hotel rate really isn’t a factor anyway.
