If you are in Scotland, yes it is ok. If you are Japan, you might still be ok,   ;D

Yes, they are legal tender in the UK (which I believe you are in...) some places choose not to accept them as payment but I've never had a real problem with them before, I have a SD who lives in Scotland who used to send me them all the time! Only once have I had them turned away in a pub  ::)

They're not legal tender anywhere, including in Scotland. Obviously, they're widely accepted in Scotland, and while banks will typically accept them in England (especially the ones based in Edinburgh!) most shops won't.

As well as the hassle, the other reason for saying no is that you don't know what real ones look like, so it would be easier to give you fakes or otherwise invalid ones.

Hmm, bit late now to say 'go and change them at a bank'. Up to you, but I'd take (some of his) time to compare them to some images online, check for watermarks, metallic strips etc. You can dress it up as 'Oooh, aren't these interesting' if you like.

Not even in Scotland.

Obviously nearly everywhere there will accept them, but currently no paper money is legal tender there. (The old Bank of England ?1 notes used to be.)

I am sorry I disagree Scottish pounds are legal tender in England I never had a problem paying with Scottish pounds.  You will find they say Clydesdale bank and Bank of scotland do not stress about it just check for your watermarks.

You will be fine :)

They are accepted in various places, but I'd be very happy to bet that they are not even legal tender in Scotland :)

Half the charity shops near me have signs saying they won't take them. Whether or not that's because someone went round here with some fakes, I don't know, but when I go to Scotland I try not to come back with any because of the hassle.

So would I, because they're not. I suggest those arguing to the contrary read this and remember that legal tender and legal currency are not the same things.

We don't tend to have problems with Scottish banknotes where I live, probably because we get lots of Scots on holiday so everybody's used to them. I've spent the odd NI note without problems too, but mostly they (along with the Channel Islands and IoM ones) go straight to the bank :).

I get similar all the time bringing Northern Ireland money spending over England. They always throw a misfit. But I tell them immediately that Sterling is the currency used there. They have to accept because if they called the police which I tell them to. They will get done for wasting their time. Many are just not savvy enough. So now when paying for things in England I do the speech before they get a word in. If none of Scottish money was legal it's fraud the banks wouldn't accept now thinking about it. I even paid in those notes here in Wales and the banks took them. The main thing here pointing out is that if it's our currency with water marks it can be value to but things. After all denying Sterling is dissing the queen. Now that would be a silly thing to do when it comes to law. I have a money checker under a UV lamp.

I stand corrected on the terminology but still stick by the fact you should be absolutely fine as I've had no problem whatsoever with them, you may have to take them to the bank rather than spending them but from experience (even using Scottish ?50 notes I'll add) you'll be fine.

Just to add, taken from the BBC website:

Quote
On its website, the Bank of England states that Scottish bank notes are not legal tender in England, while Bank of England notes are only legal tender in England and Wales. This is because no bank notes whatsoever are classed as being legal tender in Scotland.

The bank explains: "Legal tender has, however, a very narrow technical meaning in relation to the settlement of debt.

"In ordinary everyday transactions, the term 'legal tender' in its purest sense need not govern a note's acceptability in transactions. The acceptability of a Scottish or Northern Ireland note as a means of payment is essentially a matter for agreement between the parties involved.

"If both parties are in agreement, Scottish and Northern Ireland notes can be used in England and Wales. Holders of genuine Scottish and Northern Ireland notes are provided with a level of protection similar to that provided to holders of Bank of England notes."

Shops and other businesses can turn you or I and our money away for any reason they like, and there is no law anywhere which says they have to accept it. They/we can just refuse to enter into the contract which would be created (ie. by selling a Snickers) and there is nothing anybody can do to change that bar telling everybody we know that X shop is pig ignorant.

Many small shops/pubs don't accept English ?50 notes either, and if I went in with a 'speech', I'd expect them to laugh their arses off, just as I would.

And, looking at it another way, various people are happy to accept payment via cocaine or other Class A drugs, but...  ;D

If you're offered some Scottish notes, the site Amy pointed to has a good guide on how to check them.

Please please please check them out online as I got conned with a load of fakes a while back.  The problem being that all their notes look different so it is hard to know which are real and which are not.

There are also a huge amount of fake scottish notes around

Scottish notes are fine, as long as sterling is written on them. Same checks as uk notes, if you can check link that has been posted.
