No work
« on: 14 June 2011, 11:41:05 pm »
Hi,

I have been working on and off for the the past year and at the same place for the past 5 months. The first two and a half months I made heaps of money. I was constantly being booked and getting heaps of repeat bookings. For the past two and half months I have been absolutely dead. My boss just phoned me today and was wanting to rush me in for a job because one of the girls was sick and no one else could do it. She made a point of saying that. It makes me feel like I am the bottom of the barrel or something. I find it really hard to be enthusiastic about a job when she has made it sound like I was the last possible option.

I just don't understand how it could be so good for ages and then nothing. I'm probably just being paranoid but I have it in my head that I've done something wrong that I don't know about and now she doesn't like me and isn't trying to get me any work. Deep down I know that's pretty illogical given that if I make money, she makes money too and if  I'd done something wrong she could just fire me.

The way things are going I think I'm going to have to quit soon because it's just making me feel like crap and I'm not making near enough money to make it worth the risk. I just know I'll find it hard to manage on a crappy wage now though. I guess I could always go and work independently but I worry about safety.

Sorry for the moan. I don't even know what advice I'm looking for, I just needed to get it out of my head and there's no one in my normal life that I can talk to about it (sigh)

If you work for an agency it could be possible that they always push the newer girls more than the older ones??
You should consider going independent then you can push yourself as much as possible and get your earnings back up x

What Dionne says is often the case.

Do you have any reason to believe that your agent cares about your safety even half as much as you do?

This is one of the reasons why I left the agency I worked for, as I never got much work from them,  and the receptionists all had their favourites.  I was a bit concerned about going indie due to the safety aspect of things, but the help and advice from the girls on here (of which I still ask for), I went indie from last Saturday.  I can choose who I see, when I want and get to keep all of my earnings.  It's the best way to go.

It's very common for agencies to get you less work as time goes buy. There's always a newer, younger, hotter girl joining and loads of the clients will just call up to ask "who's new?". It's rare than an agency will risk losing money by trying to push the 'old girls'.

Half the time, you're only on the front page of an agency's site for about a month before you get pushed off and discarded in the back somewhere! If you want to be able to market your true USPs and get lots of continued work, you really do have to do it yourself. It's not too hard - if I can do it, anyone can. ;)

Thanks you all for responding, I really appreciate it.

So - I quit yesterday after my one job (you know the one no one else could do?  ;) ). I left on good terms though, she was fine about it and said I'm welcome back anytime.

I've decided to have a bit of a break for a little while as I think I need one. Although I've not been making much money for a couple of months, when I was earning heaps the first two months I saved up a lot of it. Glad I did that now! So I can afford to have at least a little break. And then I'm going to dive in and try working privately.

Cheers for the advice, xx
