Escorting and university
« on: 04 November 2010, 01:16:57 pm »
Hey, everyone,

Thanks so much to those who answered my last post. I just have one more question.

I'm at university now, I'm all settled down and ready to start working maybe once or twice a week for some extra money. The only problem is, I live in a university owned house and so I use their internet. When I log on, a little message comes up saying something about the information may be visible to a third party (or something like that). So obviously the university are monitoring what websites students are going on. I'm worried that if I go on adultwork the university will disconnect my internet or even worse kick me out of university for escorting!

Can they do this? I know we're not allowed on porn sites. Would AW be considered a porn site?

Thanks everyone!

X

One way to find out :) but if it isn't, I wonder what does count as porn given some of the content there.

They are probably using a proxy server. Your computer asks to be connected to x.com, the proxy gets it, looks at it, and then may or may not pass it on depending on the rules it's been given.

There are ways around them, but the easiest answer is to get a mobile internet dongle. You may have to remove an 'adult services' lock, but you'll then be free to use it for whatever sites you like.

This is an excellent idea; here is a suitably anally-retentive thread about finding the best deal for dongles. ;)

If AW isn't porn, then what on earth is?!

Edit: Here is also a thread about using your mobile to do the same job. There are many other similar discussions online - I'm not working for good ol' Martin (sadly ;)) and for technical information, geeky forums are usually your best bet for the most thorough info.

The prices in that other forum thread are quite out of date and some networks have changed various rules about how long data allowances last. It's not to difficult to find what's the best deal, but that depends on where you are (not all mobile networks are equal and it's no good having a good deal if you can't get a signal).

The alternative is using a smartphone's web browser.

Doh. Updated my post. Not meaning to send anyone away from SAAFE; it's just that there are sooo many discussions on these technical topics just sittin' around on Google waiting to be looked at. :)

I would advice you not to use the computers at uni, they can see everything your doing and they could possibly kick you out. A while ago in the new some weirdo was looking at child porn on a university computer and they caught him.
And yes Aw would be considered a porn site, theres cocks and pussies everywhere lool

I agree with browncandy Universities are very vigilant in their monitoring of
the internet users. Everything is scrutinised, and its best to not do anything on line that may
be remotely adult orientated. Get your own laptop and use it away from the uni premises, dont even sit outside
in your car checking adult work. Lol even when I recieved phone calls from clients when I did bdsm
I'd scurry from the building to find a quiet spot....university walls have big ears.
Being a good girl from now on.

I agree about dongles; I use one while I'm away and it's brilliant - I've even written my blog from the coach on the way up the M1  :D. I got a Vodaphone PAYG one which was the only one I could find where the credit doesn't expire; I've had it almost a year, it came with ?15 credit and I've topped it up twice, so fantastic value. You do have to read the small print though, because with virtually every other one I saw the credit expired in 30-90 days if it wasn't used.

I may be a bit naive here, but provided the OP is using her own computer/laptop and her own internet (via dongle, phone or whatever) what business is it of the universitys which sites she is looking at? I can't see how they can reprimand or punish somebody who isn't doing anything wrong or illegal, irrespective of whether or not they 'approve'?

On her own kit and connection, it's none of their business, but the original post was about using a university-supplied net connection, where they are going to have an interest in what's done with it.

My bad - I misunderstood the thread starter and had assumed that Roxy was just renting a house/flat owned by the university and the internet was included in the rent, or something. I'm afraid I know less about university than I do about android phones :-\.

Thanks everyone, sorry about the confusion.

I'm using my own laptop and renting a university owned house. The internet usage does come with the rent, but it's owned by the uni.
