How many of you work from hotel rooms only?
« on: 20 July 2015, 12:38:14 pm »
Hi girls,

I have a bit of a dilemma and was hoping someone might be able to give some advice.
I have decided to move back the the city I was born in after missing friends and family. It's only 30 miles or so down the road from where I am living and working now, so I was hoping to continue working here after moving until I figure out  my next move (I don't want to work in my home town)

At the moment I take all my in calls in my flat and that had worked well for me, but once I leave I'm not going to have that luxury, so it would mean booking hotel rooms to work from.

How many of you work this way and do you find it easy? Or do you feel constant pressure of worrying about paying hotel room bill, being found out my staff etc. How many days do you work? I was thinking of working 3 full days and seeing lots of clients each day.

If you could share your stories that would be fab and put my mind at ease lol x

Hotels rooms are fine, but you need to rotate your hotels.  Don't be there every week it be really obvious.

Maybe have 3 days a week working and advertise  them as tour dates and do a few areas

You do have being kicked out in the back of your mind, but at the same time you are safer in a hotel with cctv around than in a flat.

Hotels have some drawbacks, but a trade off is that you're no longer tied to one place.

I used to work from hotels. Got banned from one. Staff were suspicious at another. Some may ask for visitors names for fire regs. Obviously it's limiting for times with check in being as late as 3pm. Cheaper if you book 20 days or so in advance but then you cant cancel the room. I found some clients get more nervous about going to hotels & had 1 run away from a staff member, very embarrassing. I've had chambermaids letting themselves in even when the DND sign is on the door. I've even shouted "no thanks" & they still come in.  :FF
Bloody hassle if you ask me. Cheaper than renting off another WG though.

Its good if you can get one with a separate part from the main reception then they can't tell who's coming & going. Sound travels loudly of course also in hotels so it's easy to hear what's going on in the corridor.

I work from hotels solely. As long as you find a good one where the staff let you go about your business you shouldn't have any concerns. And yes there are a few clients who won't go to hotels but I've always been busy at hotels.

I did for 8 months before getting my flat. I did find checking in traumatic because I used the same two hotels from the same chain and felt paranoid. I could have tried others but I am a bit of a creature of habit and hate change. I loved the fact that housekeeping cleans the room and fresh towels and that, and eating in the hotel.  I would go back to hotels should the flat fail, but would use  more than the same couple of ones. On the whole I liked the hotel life.

I prefer hotels. I got booted out an apartment once plus there's the issue of security as in none. At least in a hotel I feel safe.

I choose my hotels very carefully to ensure that I have as much privacy as possible. The most I would stay is 5 nights and I am comfortable with that. I haven't had a problem with a hotel yet, even though in one I use, they can see clients coming and going on CCTV but they are really not bothered.

Often I choose hotels with rooms separate from the main hotel building and they are a godsend if you can find them as there is so much more privacy. It is always in the back of my mind that I might get asked to leave but I like to think that they have enough to do without nosing about in my sex life lol.

A former client's son is a manager in a Best Western (I use them a lot) and he said they didn't care and it wasn't unusual for people sometimes to use rooms for a few hours. As long as there's no trouble he said they turn a blind eye and this is a posh hotel so I tend not to worry so much.

Finding the money can be an issue but (and Amy has given advice on this before in another thread) do NOT be tempted by the book now without cancellation option as whilst it is cheaper you cannot change or cancel the booking. I use a well known online booking site and I am constantly changing the hotels I book as I might have second thoughts or decide to change to a different one.

Good luck xxx

Thanks guys!

Appreciate all the tips. I guess my main concern is that having an in call apartment I can see clients whenever. There is no time frame. Where as hotel rooms you are restricted to check in and check out and if you don't see anyone then you are in trouble!

I agree with most girls. I have worked both from home and hotels. I think  that more than the type of premises you use, is the location and transport links that determine how busy you;ll be.

As long as youre discrete and not extremely obvious (ie do not distrub sign on the door constantly, asking for towels/sheets before check in, taking clients back to back/etc) you should be fine

And try to get a hotel where they can walk str8 to the room (no lobby)

I used hotels for the first 6 months and yes, they do have pros, but I got so fed up looking at hotel rooms that now, that I work from a flat, I can't even go to a hotel for personal purposes.

There are a few chain hotels that offer early check in and late check out, which is great. But the main factor for me was the cost and therefore, the pressure to make back that cost even before a profit is made.

I see as many clients as possible (not exactly back to back) and I have my do not disturb up a fair bit. Today I got my room cleaned before I went to lunch and then didn't put it up. Head of housekeeping walked in during a booking. She knocked but opened the door immediately. I was still dressed and the client wasn't visible from the doorway, but it wasn't ideal.

Housekeeping usually finishes in hotels in the mid to late afternoon and it's not practical to wait for them to go away.

I hate this, I mean seriously who on earth trains these people, you should never just walk into an occupied room wether the DND sign is up or not (by occupied I mean a room that's been booked not that there is someone actually in the room at that moment).

Even the ones that do like one quick knock then enter bug me.

This is why I prefer hotels with a chain or latch so someone cant just barge in!!  Have had this happen a few times, its so unacceptable!
