Help please - part-time escort advice
« on: 10 December 2011, 01:33:25 am »
I'd like to work as a part-time escort to earn enough to think about getting a mortgage etc.  However I work in a full-time office-based professional day job that I wish to keep and have no idea how I could set myself up as an earning escort and not have the day job find out! Can anyone help or offer any advice in this respect??  Thank you so much.   Coralie x

Hi Coralie, and welcome!

It sounds like you could do with having a good read of the main SAAFE site. It's absolutely packed with information that any escort can use to help with getting started and working safely. You'll want to particularly check out some of the many links in the articles (such as the "Where to Advertise" article) which will send you to some of the most popular escort directories so you can look at other sex workers' adverts and see how they stay anonymous (or not!). Plus, you can see what people in your area are charging and what's generally on offer (or not!).

There's also the search form on this forum if you want to search for some of the many threads about things like "blur photos", "discretion", "outcalls", "security", and anything else you can think of. This forum is full of information but many of the posters are very busy and can't always come back to rewrite things in new threads. So do have a massive browse and read everything you can - and if you have further questions after all that, please do post here! :)

Thanks Emily,

The SAAFE site has been invaluable so far.  This question is the only one I'm having a problem finding out the answer to.

I want to start on the right foot and pay the tax etc however I'm guessing escorting would become my 2nd job and be subject to 40% tax if I didn't want my day job to find out.

Think I need to find a friendly accountant but would like to know roughly before I start engaging the services of someone.

Very confusing  :-[

You'll be part time self employed and will only have to pay 40% tax if your combined earnings (after expenses in your escorting) hit that threshold. Best to ask HMRC or an accountant, but this is how I understand it :)

this link might be useful: http://taxaid.org.uk/
'A charity that offers up-to-date information and tax advice on tax matters to individuals on low and modest incomes.'

Ive had a glance at it and been meaning to call them for ages, I find the tax stuff bloody baffling.

Thank you so much everyone for your help.  The tax link was great - I found out it is possible to be full-time employed and run your own business part-time so that was a big help.  Just need to find out if I can keep it secret now.  Which is where I think an accountant will come in.

Thank you all very much for being so welcoming and helpful to the newbie! xx

Hi Coralie and welcome :)

The best place to get tax advice is HMRC - it's them who will be calculating and collecting it, after all. Their website and the people who man their Self Employed helpline are great and couldn't be more helpful - it's a freephone number too (and as has been covered ad nauseum on various threads already, you don't have to tell them the nature of your business if you don't want to).

I would also say that it's not necessary to find an 'escort friendly' accountant - an individual working for themselves with no employees doesn't present a challenge to any accountant and if somebody in any role or offering any service which is not unique to this industry seems to be deliberately targetting workers in it than it could well be because they think it's OK to charge us more than other people, behave unprofessionally towards us and so on (it's not guaranteed of course, and some will be fine). You are a business owner seeking a paid professional service and the nature of your business is irrelevant.
