Why do I keep getting kicked off?
« on: 23 April 2011, 09:02:54 pm »
I have registered twice and gotten kicked off both times. I don't understand why. There must be some rule that I'm breaking but I've looked through the guidelines and can't seem to figure out what it is. I'm not sure how else to get in contact with the mods in order to figure out what the issue is here, so I've remade my account again. Can someone please let me know what's going on?

Thanks.

From what I can see, in order to get a ban you have to be either an obvious spammer (and the board gets more spam than most people realise because it gets deleted quickly) or a complete pain (in which case you will almost always get a warning first).

However some spammers have been banned in the past by their ip address, the numerical address their computer happened to have at the time. As there are only about four billion of those, they're running out and get reused. If your computer ends up with a banned ip address, your account gets banned. Oops.

So if you have no idea, it is probably an innocent automated mistake.

We've had a couple of reports of new profiles disappearing either before or after confirmation, but it seems to be in the first 24 hours. Is that what's happening? You try to sign in and your account doesn't exist?

If that's it I'm sorry, but we've got no idea what's going on so we don't have a way to fix it. You can register again with the same details though and once your profile survives the first day you should be fine. So far I think it's only happened to people who haven't posted yet, so hopefully it won't happen to you again.

I have another suggestion. The same thing happened to me after I'd been using the forum for a while. After a bit of investigating I found I was only banned when using one of the browsers on one of my laptops. I think it's because I had the Foxy Proxy add on enabled in Firefox on that laptop. I'm sure I've read a post by one of the mods, I think it was Anika but I may be wrong, saying you weren't allowed to use a proxy server when using this forum.
I wasn't even aware I was using a proxy server until I got the message saying I was banned from Saafe. I must admit I'm still not entirely sure what one is, Foxy Proxy got added to my Firefox when I was playing around with the new add on collections. If you have any further problems do check you're not inadvertently using a proxy server.

Your issue was different, CeCe. Your profile was still active, but you got the "sorry you're banned" message. That was because the proxy server you were using made it look like you were coming from the same place as someone who'd been banned for spamming. (It can also happen with mobile internet, and if you're unlucky it could happen with your regular connection - email me if this happens to you.)

We've added something to the forum to deal with spammers and I'm trying to clear out most of the banned IP addresses, but it's tedious work so it's going to take some time.
