Mirena coil discussion thread
« on: 10 November 2016, 04:32:10 pm »
Well.. I am quite unhappy now as I had to recline clients for about 2 weeks now...

I got Mirena fitted in, hoping my period would stop. My doctor told me it is better not to use tampon while with Mirena cause when I pull the tampon out, I might grab the Mirena string too and Mirena can get out as well..

I've bleeding since putting it in... light flow, but can't see clients like this... I've been using sponge with light period.. but with the thing my doctor said, I don't wanna chance pulling mirena out when I get rid of sponge.. So.. no sponge.. and bleeding not stopping...

I am very worried.. Has anyone ever tried putting sponge in while having Mirena??

Hi I got one have had for 5 years ... I have no problems with sponges .. Although don't use very often as really light periods now ... I did recently get the GP to cut threads bit shorter , as I felt I could feel threads if being played with a little too deeply .. Xx

Thanks Angel eyes, it feels comforting to know that I CAN use sponge... I was getting desperate not being able to work. Thanks!

Also, it will take a few weeks for the coil to settle down, and then a few more before it starts reducing your periods. Do you have a follow-up appointment to check that it's still in place OK?

Hi Kay, I went to see doctor 1 week after having it in. And then doctor told me I could come back in 4 weeks. So I am 3 weeks from go checking again.

And afterwards, it will be check up every 6 months. That's what I was told.

VERY unlikely, and quite old fashioned advice. You cannot mistake the two strings - a tampon string hangs out of the vagina hole and feels like string. Even if you try tucking it up inside, it still feels like string. Whereas the COIL 'strings' hang out of your cervix into your vagina. Right up in your vagina canal. The string feels like fishing line. Very thin plastic nylon. And if it's hanging out of your vagina hole, it's too long and needs to be trimmed.

So a sponge would be fine, as long as you aren't pulling on anything that feels like plastic :)

Thanks Cat_BBW for the advice. But when I put sponge up in, I always have very hard time getting them out. It involves rough finger movement in there trying grab the thing and pull it out.. Always quite a drama... Very different job compare to pulling the normal tampon out..

By the way your comment just gave me another concern.. I did read from a google search that man can feel it and it sometimes hurts them.. I didn't know it is plastic, if that's the case, I think it really might hurt poking penis.. Or even break comdom?? Mirena does the contraception job.. but if condom breaks.. STD might happen no?

The strings soften aften a few weeks - when I first had a normal IUD fitted my partner said it jabbed him: turned out it had displaced almost immediately! The replacement was fine, and I can't feel the strings at all. At your check up, you can always get them trimmed if you feel they're a bit long, but they will soften over time.

But no, obviously the coil is no protection against any type of STD.

If you have a coil fitted please do not use a sponge .

My mirena coul was fitted around 4 years ago and I began having light bleeding so did what most wg's do and used a sponge.  Over the course of around 6 months I would use a variety of different of menstrual sponges, natural sponge and rammed sponge.  A few days ago I began to notice a very potent smell coming from my lady regions after removing the sponge.  I knew this odour was not down to poor hygine as I shower and use a variety of products to ensure I'm fresh down below.

My friend commented that it was probably BV, I doubted that this was the case as I had no discharge or any of the other associated synmoroms.   Anyway today I was having great difficult removing a large chunk of rammer sponge which I had inside me.  After around five minutes of fiddling around in there, I managed to wrap my fingers around the sponge and tugged it out.

Out popped the sponge ... and out popped my mirena coil!   I was left baffled and was even more suprised when I noticed that one of the mirena strings had a small piece of old sponge intact.  A small piece must have broken off on one of my previous sponges and had been eroding in my lady parts for god knows how long.

I read about mirena here on SAAFE and installed it last year.

Had it for 1 year now and I wanna share the thoughts. Also share your experience with me too, especially about WEIGHT.

I installed it mainly to stop period. Result is it kinda did, and kinda didn't.

For about 2.5 month, I had constant small spotting. Although the amount was slight, it was noticeable enough.

If I work without any sponge, 8 times out of 10, clients will notice.

Anyway, after almost 3 month, spotting finally stopped.

And had about happy 6 month without period or spotting. I thought the devil days has gone and my body adapted to it well.

But since couple of month ago, spotting came back. This time, slightly heavier spotting.

Judging by the cycle of it, I think this is my period... But it is all too reduced, so very small amount.

Whether the amount is small or not, period is period and if I get period (need sponge), then there's no point having this thing.

Now the big mystery is the weight...

I am always a bit plump side, has been that way since teens.

I go on strict diet + workout, would lose about 10kg, have some fitter days, and would gain back, tone up again, repeat...

Even though I am not stick figured nor muscular, I am very athletic, I am used to hard workout cause I did this for decade.

This time though, I am going on same workout routine and diet, my weight hasn't gone down at all. Maybe would lose 2 pound?

I know my body and how the workout affects my body, usually I lose 10KG each time I go on this diet.

This time, not at all!

I feel like I wanna remove this mirena, and go on same routine again and see if weight drops. If it does, my suspicion will be proved...

Anyone who had mirena before, has anything to share regarding weight?

(I didn't gain weight, but can't lose weight)

I gained, and I believe it triggered a bout of depression - however, the most recent gynae that I saw said this CANNOT be the case as the hormones are localised (to the womb) and not flowing throughout your whole body, and it was likely that other factors were at play. Despite him being the educated expert, I don't believe him.

Despite using various hormonal methods, I've lost and gained weight many times throughout my adult life. The times when I haven't (which at the time I blamed on a different medication), were because I wasn't eating as little as I thought I was - I had to be really strict and measure stuff. Metabolism and activity rates can change (which includes daily lifestyle stuff.

Sounds like Mirena wasn't the solution. When I first started with the implant I'd have some periods, then none for a long time, then spotted for a long time. Mine are affected by my bodyweight/bodyfat, activity and stress levels and I've found that in my 7th year of the implant I have none at all (which knowing the effect of no periods I am becoming concerned about).

Whatever it is it's a problem when engaging in sex work. I'm lucky because when I get a period it's over in a few days, which often coincides with a holiday (and flying brings it on!), or days off. Spotting is very light and I am not afraid to own up to it if it happens out of the blue in a booking.

I have been very lucky with my coil, had no weight gain or periods for the last five years. Twice this year I have noted some spotting but when I mentioned this at my GUM clinic they said it might be best to get it changed but the two clients that did this were a tad rough. I guess I am one of the lucky ones  :)

There is loads of info about the Mirena on the web. A lot of women have experienced so many problems of varying degrees of severity & specificity, myself included.

The thing is impregnated with hormones; of course it affects your entire body!  Cue the "mirena crash".
