Free websites (and not so free)
« on: 09 January 2012, 05:55:51 pm »
Hi,

I feel the need to open a thread on free websites for us  the "indie" ladies  so that we can all comment and leave info & feedback on the different choices of free websites out there (stuff like how "escort friendly" they are, easy to design etc...) I'm always researching for new and more improved version of my own website so I will update this thread with new findings. Also I think it's a useful thread for newbies  that will help them to go indie.

As per now I'll write my personal experience with the following:

weebly.com
(clean and beautiful but a bit limited number of template designs, extremely easy to use, never had any sex industry issue in one year I've been using it).

Moonfruit. com
(very beautiful, extensive number of templates but it takes a harvard degree to learn how to use it. Sorry : feel free to call me dumb bit---h. No issue regarding sexual stuff)

Wordpress.com
(So far the worse. Extremely limited number of templates, ugly & old fashioned template designs and complicated to use)
Mornings were made for sleeping, wild sex and bacon.

You are right about Moon Fruit. It's a bloody nightmare to use.I have used other free websites before and I am pretty OK with content management systems but Moon Fruit defeats me :FF Does anyone know how  to get the warning page to come up as the first page of the site? Also how can you remove the warning page from the menu bar,so it wont' show up?

If you Google 'free Wordpress themes' or similar you get more design choices than you can shake a stick at. Some Moonfruit sites are bloody hideous and some Wordpress sites are lovely - it depends on the competence of who's making them, not which sitebuilder they're using.

I can use Moonfruit, but my computer can't, it's far too Flash-heavy for my old dinosaur to cope with.

Exactly, what is too Flash-y for your computer, can be too much also for clients'. Flash is an outdated Internet nightmare, coming to its end slowly but steadily.

I use moonfruit and have no issue with the CMS, got it cracked, but it's flash heavy which means that some directories won't take it, and it's not great for mobiles and ipads

To get a page first in the menu/come up first, you need to make your main page that you link to the warning page, and if you go to 'pages' and 'managed my pages', you can rearranged the order of the pages too

When in edit/ pages there is also a box you can tick/untick that says 'show this page in the menu'

I will write more clear instructions when I actually have my site in front of me!

I use moonfruit, I found the free PDF instruction manual really helpful. It's VERY step by step.

I'm planning to move to livejournal soon as I think the templates are less limited than moonfruit.

Thanks for the tip.I have just done it but  must say Moonfruit is the worse website builder I have ever used. I am used to content management systems but this one almost did me in. Utter frustration. However, I think  I have mastered the basics. I couldn't be bothered to use the user manual. Maybe that's what did it.

I prefer CMS as it is so much easier and I agree FLASH is a little nightmare and does not get crawled correctly when you are trying to get found which is very frustrating!

Go CMS go lol
