Bleached global hair colour
« on: 14 April 2011, 11:32:24 am »
First of all, I wasn't sure what to put as the subject title, but here goes... I have been having foil highlights since 2009 and I have recently had my hair done else where to the normal place I go to. I had a global blonde colour all over my hair back in early March, I was in the salon for over an hour, my hair used to be very dark before and now it's like bright blonde. What I am trying to say is.. when I had the bleach all over my hair, it was very painful and it hurt like hell! It wasn't a calming relaxing treatment. The hairdresser put loads of bleach on again I am sure she used 2 pots full, and it felt like cement on my head ! Well even when she was washing it off my hair I was in agony ! Afterwards, I couldn't do anything for the rest of the day, my head felt soo tight like I had worn a swimming cap that was tight on my head! my head felt very heavy.

1. If you have a over all blonde bleached colour , are you supposed to feel tightness around your head ?

I loved the colour but now my roots looklike they need doing again, but I don't dare go through the same procedure.

Would just like to know if anyone else has experienced this ? Thanks x

I have a friend who had his whole head bleached and it was so painful for him he was having seziures while they were doing it and he was bedridden for the next few days lol
And he is a hair dresser/colour specialist and he had his hair done by a professional
So although I'm not sure if it's 'normal' but I think sometimes it can have that effect on some people xx

I used to have blonde foils, then when there was so much blonde that it had taken over, I started having full head bleach as it was cheaper. It is addictive though because i think the roots are more noticeable and I felt I had to get it bleached all the time.

I think maybe when I was having highlights it was a high-lift tint which is less damaging, but when I had full head it was stronger stuff? My head did tingle and itch quite a lot  with this but it ususally wore off when they washed it off. Honestly, the warm water on my head after bleach was such an amazing feeling of relief!!

Maybe your scalp is sensitive and you have had a bad reaction to it if it was still hurting after? I think they are supposed to do patch tests with any colour (I have never been offered one at any hairdressers though!).

Now I am growing out my full head bleach and just have foil highlights every now and again through the top as it was quite damaging over time, as you always get a bit of overlap between the new and old bleach when they apply it which weakens the hair and makes it prone to breakage. Although I have to admit to doing a few home applications which isnt the best idea! I would say if you do have it done again, try somewhere else and mention the previous experience as they may have used a stronger peroxide to get a faster result? (I'm not a colour technician though, just semi-educated guessing :))

Personally I have to break a full head bleach addiction  (I'm not even kidding!!) in order to get my hair back  to something like healthy again, so my advice would be if you were fine with foils before, try to grit your teeth through the drastic roots stage and stick with foils going forward xx

I used to have full head bleach too and a platinum tint after - my hair is very dark and I know exactly what you mean! They occasionally used to put a heat lamp over mine to make it work faster and I remember almost passing out from the heat once, and your scalp feels tight and weird for a while afterwards (I haven't forgotten the relief when they wash it off either). I had to gradually get mine back to dark because it's so long I couldn't maintain the condition and it would start breaking off as soon as it got past my shoulders.

So it isn't anything to worry about as such, but it's not pleasant and it doesn't sound as if the hairdresser bothered to communicate with you much? I loved mine blonde - it is damaging, expensive and time-consuming but if I could snap my fingers and have it back I would! Even if your hair is naturally dark, maybe you could ask if there was a gentler formula they could use, even if it takes a bit longer or needs extra help from a heat lamp? It used to take a few hours or so for my scalp to feel back to normal but if you're concerned I think you should discuss it with the hairdresser before you do it again.

If it's any consolation, I had very dark hair which I used to dye/have dyed all sorts of colours with a certain amount of pain and difficulty.

I now find the colouring process very simple and painless for the simple reason that I've gone grey. The only colour I can have without looking dreadful is blonde, because your skin tone changes as your hair gets greyer. No longer can I have dark purple/bright red/black or even brown hair without looking bizarre, so think yourselves lucky!

I'm a brunette and I have a A LOT of grey hair (and some white hairs too!). I use indigo leaves (mixed with a bit of henna) once every 2 months. Indigo gives you a dark black/brown colour (depending on the amount of time you leave it on your hair). It's also gives volume and a healthy shine. I  add a little bit of henna to give a chestnut tone.

VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure it's REAL organic indigo and not the "black henna" sold in indian shops (it carries ppd, a highly toxic very allergic chemical made with carbon monoxide that will ruin your hair).

I buy mine form Lush and it's already mixed with the henna (caca noir). And it's only 7, 25 pounds!  I used to dye my grey hair in the hairdresser every 3 months. Never again since I discovered indigo leaves!  ;D ;D

Thanks for everyone's comments I feel much better now, that I am not the only one who has been through this experience with being a bleached blonde!

I think I will next try and talk to my hairdresser. but she's not a great listner, she has told me it is much better than a tint and foils as it lasts longer and it's healthier for your hair ?!.. hmm not so sure about that ! but I can't see myself having to carry on, if I have to take the whole day off if my head keeps feeling tight after every application ! it's somehow not normal, i should be able to leave the salon and go back to work or study at least.  Ive always had my hair profressionaly done never would do a bleach diy kit, i wouldn't know what to do lol! my hair is quite strong and I do put masks on my hair to keep it in good condition.  My hairdresser once did say the next application wont be so bad as it has to get used to your hair and "you'll be fine afterwards" So I will see what happens.. x

I have black hair and used to have mine bleached every couple of weeks and was always in agony for days afterwards until a new hairdresser told me to go home and wash my scalp with milk. It works. Just make sure after a nice soak in it you wash it all out properly with cool water or it will stink
Truth is far more important than what one wants to hear. With truth there is no us and them or colour or religion there is just fact

Lol thanks for that tip! I have booked a appointment for this thursday to have a consultation with my hairdresser, she doesn't exactly use bleach it's similar to bleach but its made with beeswax and some other ingredients, can't exactly remember the word but it was beginning with the letter P. I think I may just have a sensetive scalp or allergic to one of the ingredients in the product.

Stick with foils/ highlights IMO... At least you're only damaging some of your hair!!! Normal for bleach to hurt your scalp, it's v harsh.x

Hi

Can I recommend Salongeek for hair queries? Its a forum for professionals in the Beauty and Hair Industry and is full of useful information.  There are different sections for beauty, nails, hair etc and they do get very technical about it all but they also have a special forum where us civilians can ask advice from professionals. The advice is impartial and its coming from people whose income doesnt depend on you accepting what they say as gospel.

I havent put a link as they might not appreciate the traffic coming from this site but you'll find it if you google it. Given the amount of time and money we all have to spend making sure we look great I would hope they'd welcome us with open arms but you cant ever be too sure :)
