FLAT SCAM .....
« on: 15 March 2010, 02:39:23 pm »
just to be aware its been around for a while but its a varient of the email /nigerian scams that are about

you want to rent a nice flat in london for the week

you find a a super luxury flat in chelsea  westminster  kensington  ie top posh areas at below market rate

you ring up and you are told very plausibly that they ( the owners live in liverpool scotland rome spain ) anywhere but the where the flat is

yes the flat is still availble but could you pay a small deposit into either your own  western union account or a friends western union account  to show that you have the money  -  note they dont want you to send them any money just put money into your account /freinds  they dont want to travel all that way and your not there dont have the money ect  and  if you could  copy the reciept and send them a copy of it so that they knew you are genuine and have the money  they dont ask you for lots of money  - couple of hundred pounds so you wont feel suspiscious

Dosnt sound that unreasonable not if your gettting a luxury flat at below market rate plus they cant steal your money from western union can they if its in your freinds account

however  with the copy of the reciept they have your  ref number and name and can go and withdraw the money and there is fuck all you can do

there are even fake letting  agency set up to do this scam  its very common on gumtree so just be aware if you are looking for a flat to rent

and then

I've had this and alarm bells rang immediately. Partly because the photos/details were the same as some sent to me 12 months ago but claiming to be in a different town.

They actually approached me in response to a 'property wanted' ad I placed.

This time all they said was that the property was in 'Cumbria' or the area I was looking at (which is quite large, try a whole county!!!!). Everytime I asked which town the place was in they just said the same thing which is obviously useless/essential to anyone. So that's when alarm bell 2 rang. I was pretty sure it was a scam so pressed them for a town and street. They finally sent me an address which DIDN'T exist or if it did it was certainly NOT a residential street with a their property type on it (they said House and I knew that street was all businesses/shops in a city centre might have been flats but no houses). It was at that point I got the email regards the WU deposit, claiming they needed to know I had the money upfront before viewing the place as their solicitor has advised since previous tenants had moved in and said they couldn't pay until the end of the first month.

I sent an email back telling them in this country rent is ALWAYS paid up front everyone knows that, and if they thought otherwise they should check their facts.

Didn't get back to me!

One thing the emails looked as if they were written either by a child or someone from out of the country.

Yeah, I've seen loads of these. They were annoying to start with but get easy to spot with experience. Below market rent, no phone number, no location specifics (though they may come up with something if asked), claim unusual-for-the-area luxuries like air conditioning. Rent often includes all bills and satellite TV and internet. Some even advertise totally out of place features like "great view of the mountains".

These scamers are still operating.
When I was looking for a flat Ive dealt with about 4 of them, or maybe it was just one?
They emailed me through gumtree, asking same thing and I turned them down in an instant.
I will never transfer money/pay for something I cant see and without meeting with the owner in person and getting a receipt in return but they didnt agree to let me see the flat until after I paid.
Be aware girls.
