sensitive literary agent for prossie lit
« on: 29 June 2022, 12:32:28 pm »
long shot but thought i'd ask on here if anyone uses/knows of literary agents ?
I'm thinking in the same way there are prossie friendly accountants/ web designers/ therapists -  A decent, grown up, non judgy type of agent :)

Not sure if 'prossie-lit'  is what I have here but i do have a novel which includes some (a lot of!)  personal experiences in escorting.  It's been interesting workshopping on my MA course and I'm told it may be worth approaching an agent.  Although gritty, it's a sex positive novel which dispels a few myths

I have been approached via my blog by quite a few literary agents but did not like the direction any of them wanted me to take, so declined to properly engage with them.

Personally, I think this has all been done to death, and have yet to read anything in print that really resonated with me. I also can’t help but feel that anyone interested in publishing a firsthand experience will have a very definite idea of the kind of voice/direction they want (which is my experience).

To my mind, the obvious agent to start with is the one who worked with Belle de Jour/Brook Magnanti, and also look to see who represents Rachel Moran. However that said, self-publishing on Kindle or even starting a Patreon or Substack is worth considering too as this will give you complete control in a way working with an agent/editor will not.

The brick wall will be is that many don’t want to dispel a few or any myths around sex work - sex positive/happy hooker does not really sell books. Also, unless your experiences involve known people, again, interest won’t be huge unless you name them, and then that brings its own set of problems. But, if it’s a novel, well, that does give more artistic license.

Good luck with this!

Thanks Miffy - yep the agent for Belle du jour is something I'll follow up.  The whore's  not happy the whole way through otherwise there'd be no turning point of course.  In any case the thing is written now - couldn't stop myself so I'll persevere. I'm now off to read your blog.  Looking forward.

I’d take a trip to Waterstones and find a few books in the genre. Make a note of the publishers . You could also do this with AMazon.
Another avenue would be looking in the Writers and Artists Year Book (2022). Don’t buy it but you can normally find a copy in the library and it lists publishers and what they’d accept. They also
List agents.

Self publishing is also a good option. Via Amazon is the easiest method (Search:KDP (kindle direct publishing). You can buy a cover (don’t make your own unless you have design experience) for under £100. Look at what other writers have used for covers( ie Belle du Jour) as opposed to what you think you’d like. Readers like to quickly know what the genre of the book is and the cover is the best way.
You can upload and just sell as an ebook or pay someone to design a “wrap around “ cover for a paperback.
To successfully make money SP you need to advertise . Facebook and Amazon adverts are worth exploring. As would finding a way to either novelise it or split it into more than one book.

I always said I'd write a book one day.
One book I know about is 'confessions of a justified hooker' by Sandra Ntonya. The publisher was Austin Macauley.
Not sure if this is what you want though.

Thank you so much for detailed reply, PinkR - sound advice - It is a novel (I didn't make that clear before).

Milf-G - do it! Get those creative juices flowing; you'll enjoy it, I'm sure.  I will check out that title too as I hadn't heard of that one. Thank you.

It's more of an autobiography. She had a disabled child and was getting no help. Think she was Manchester based, had footballers as clients. A client told me about her, he had met her. I keep meaning to buy it and read it. I will write a book one day, got some corkers of stories to tell. Not sure I have enough material though atm. Leas than 2 years in.
