Spittal Street SW clinic Edinburgh
« on: 01 August 2014, 02:04:08 pm »
Thought I would make a post for anyone in or around Edinburgh who may not know about the clinic.

It's open on a Thursday night almost every week (closed for Christmas weeks, etc) 5pm-7:30pm at-

Spittal Street Centre, Lady Lawson Street Entrance
22-24 Spittal Street
Edinburgh EH3 9DU

This clinic is exclusively for female sex workers, although I believe they run a male one as I've seen a poster about it inside (sorry, can't remember the details).

So, basically you drop in anytime between 5 and 7:30, buzz the buzzer and are let in. The place is occasionally used as a needle exchange, dentist, and general screening clinic so you have to enter through this locked door.

When you go in you are greeted by one of the team- usually people within Justice, the NHS or from various projects- don't let this put you off- you can tell them whatever you want, as little as you want, or as much. Using a fax name or number is also ok.

I go for my 12 weekly MOT only, but you can just drop in for a chat with the team- they offer help with Exiting SW etc.

So the MOT itself is done by a lovely female doctor (same one each week, who always remembers you!) and sometimes she has a student. You get the bloods, the swabs, free condoms, Smear test, contraception you require (depo, coil, implant, pill) here too. She can also refer you onto specialists for mental and physical health services if you need.

All in all, I have never felt anything but welcome there, everyone is helpful and non judgemental regardless of what part of the sex industry you are in.

They also go around saunas and flats (you can book them to your working flat if there is more than one girls there- yes I know, not legal- but they still come) and to the streets to support workers.

Can't praise the service enough and would encourage everyone in the area to use it  :)

Thank you so much for posting this!

Ive been a tad stressed about where to go and was dreading having to go to the gp or the place my friend went where they all seemed stressed out their nut.

Anyway thanks again

Sometimes you just want to be able to speak to someone who gets it. I'm available for in-person sessions in Edinburgh or online

It's fab, I'm leaving Edinburgh and moving 40 miles away but I will still travel to this clinic when I need to!

This clinic is excellent. Always go there for regular checks.
They're non judgmental and not nosey, personally confidentiality is very important for me, I don't like lots of questions about how or where I conduct my work and they respect this.
But I'm sure they'll quite happily have an in depth chat and offer emotional support for those that want it.

Beats a 'normal' clinic. Even had a cuppa offered on occasion :)

I'm actually thinking of travelling to this one even though it's a 4-5 hour round trip, as it sounds a lot better than the one I go to.

I went here last week and they were fantastic I now have loads of support for all my different needs the lady who does the tests is extremely lovely and professional. There was no judgement at all from anyone and I got a cup of coffee aswell.

Five out of five stars for this place.

It's still open - I went there earlier this week. I've always found the staff to be helpful and non-judgmental.

Wednesday: 1.30pm - 4pm

Thursday: 2pm - 7pm

They have a new website: http://www.lothiansexualhealth.scot.nhs.uk/Services/SpittalStreetWomensClinic/Pages/default.aspx

The Wednesday clinic (1.30m - 4pm) now takes place at the Chalmers Centre. It's staffed by the same friendly staff as at Spittal St.  Simply tell the receptionist you're there for the Spittal St women's clinic.

The Thursday clinic is still at Spittal Street as usual from 2pm to 7.30pm.

To add a little to the above- went to Spittal St last Thursday and they are not exclusively sex workers on Thursday 2pm-5pm some service users from the previous clinic were still there at 5pm- one of them was male (not a SW). Just to give people a heads up.
Sometimes if the previous clinic on a Thursday closes on time they have a break around 5pm, if the door is locked then knock on the window.  :)
