Not sure where to put this post, so if it's in the wrong section, then please move it. Thanks
I visit my nearest gum clinic about every 6 weeks to get a full screening, and usually book an evening appointment in advance. That way I'm not having to visit during my working hours and lose work and as it's near a tram line it's easy to get to as I don't drive.
Over the past year though they have become increasingly short staffed, and today when I tried to book I was told they are no longer able to offer evening appointments, only walkin's during the day. Obviously this is a big inconvenience, as I don't really want to spend (up to) 5 hours of my working day sitting and waiting to be seen when I could be working, with the possibility of being turned away and having to go back another day, if they are unable to see me that day.
I'm not blaming the nurses or dr's, as I've been going to this clinic for 7 years now, and know all of them. I've seen first hand over these years how their targets have risen, the cutbacks, longer hours etc.
They are amazing people, but have been put under tremendous pressure by the government, and it's no wonder that many of them have moved on to better working conditions elsewhere.
When I spoke to reception today, they said I should try another clinic, which is all fair and well, but many of them don't offer evening appts, are either difficult to get to on public transport or will take over an hour on a bus or tram, or don't offer full screenings, and have limited services. So while I'll be able to get an appointment, it's still going to take at least 3 hours out of my day to get to one of these other clinics that offer the service I require.
I was advised by reception today that unless patients, especially those who work in the sex industry don't complain to PALS, then nothing will be done, and services will continue to be cut.
I'm sure many of you won't really be affected by this, but for those of us who need a clinic which offers full screenings and do find it difficult to get to a GUM clinic because they don't drive if you could
write/phone or email PALS with your complaints about your local clinic been either shut down or have their services reduced or moved, and that if enough patients complain then something can be done. This is the link https ://www.nhs.uk/chq/pages/1084.aspx?categoryid=68
