Why every sex worker should take self defence lessons.

Self-defence is important to learn for sex workers of all genders. The risk of violent attack is high in the sex worker industry.

We are running free self defence courses one weekend a month at our premises in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. We can cater for up to max of 10 people.

Our club has mats down for safety. Attendees only need to bring gym clothing or other clothing that is light and flexible like leggings and  T-shirts. Please don%u2019t wear Jeans. We also advise you to bring a bottle or water or sports drink. You will be bare footed. We can cater for up to 10 people at a time. I will be attending with my instructor who will be teaching, and I will be the demonstrator.

My instructor is fully insured, enhanced DBS checked and used to be a serving officer in Army so has plenty of experience with self-defence techniques.

Our next class is a Sunday in May 1pm till 5pm. It will be 4 hours in duration with 15 min breaks in-between. This course is free of charge for any sex workers attending. (Please email or pm for exact dates or for further info).

What does self-defence teach? Self-defence is great to learn for sex workers (any gender). What we teach: Body confidence - Sometimes people try to bully you, especially if you are smaller than them, or seem timid. Sometimes all it takes is to portray yourself as confident. Being able to stand up to someone with body confidence who is intimidating you, is all it takes to stop anything escalating further. We teach you, body confidence, standing your ground and de-escalation techniques if you ever feel you're in a vulnerable situation.

What we teach:

Body confidence - Sometimes people try to bully you, especially if you are smaller than them, or seem timid.
Sometimes all it takes is to portray yourself as confident. Being able to stand up to someone with body confidence who is intimidating you, is all it takes to stop anything escalating further.

We teach you body confidence, standing your ground and de-escalation techniques if you ever feel you're in a vulnerable situation.

Self-defence - We teach you legal self-deference techniques that are within the law. It's legal to use self-defence techniques as long as it's classed as reasonable force.

About techniques

Strangled - want to be able to get out of being strangled. Yes, it's definitely something us sex workers worry about, strangled to death. It doesn't matter how big or strong the person is we will show you techniques to use the person's body strength against then, and how you can use your own strength to get a person off you who is trying to strangle you.

Attacked from behind - Yes, we will show you techniques on how to defend yourself if attacked from behind.

Backed into a corner - We show you techniques on how to get out of the situation where you feel trapped and away to safety.

And much more.

This course is designed for people who are complete beginners. It's taught in a safe, fun environment and no one is expected to do anything they feel uncomfortable with.

Next Sunday there's a free self defence class in Melton Mowbray run by a (male) martial arts instructor.

The class is primarily for women - the instructor works with a very experienced female martial arts coach so most practise is done with her and each other.

I attended one of the classes in July and was absolutely knackered and black and blue afterwards! But it was a lot of fun and taught me some useful techniques.

I believe there's a morning and an afternoon session of around 4 hours each. There are toilet facilities and nearby free parking. Please send me a PM if you want more details.
