Australia rentals
« on: 19 October 2022, 09:15:06 pm »
Hi,

I’m going to Sydney on a working holiday visa. Looking to rent [apartment] first week or two then find a rental in Sydney. Which areas are best to rent in for incalls? Would like to be pretty central and was looking at Surrey hills area? Also I will be working from this. My worry is proving my employment as a sex worker to the estate agents and whether this will impact me securing a rental. I can prove in terms of savings or I have enough to cover the rent for 6 months.

I lived and worked in Sydney in 2018 on a working holiday visa. Initially started off with brothel accommodation but I would definitely not recommend that route. The best area for heavy foot traffic is the CBD and its surrounding areas (Haymarket, Surry Hills ect). There are 2 very popular brothels in Surry Hills. The other two biggest brothels are located in Double Bay and Glebe which are both also under a 10 minute drive to the CBD.

The cost in all of these places will be premium for a solo renter to find a nice studio place. You could look instead at less affluent areas as the whole Eastern suburbs is actually pretty small. I spent 6 months in Kensington which doesn't have a lot of curb appeal (student area) but was amazing rent for a two bedroom apartment and is still less than 15 minutes drive from the CBD. I paid 2 months rent up front plus deposit to private owners I found via gumtree.

I think I’m leaning more towards surry hills for a rental. I also have another question about taxes-can’t seem to find an email address to enquire with the tax office there on their website. As self employed I will need to pay my taxes there. However not sure whether I have to sit there and eligible for tax refund when I leave and if so will I need to pay here in the uk when I return too? I’m hoping to transfer some of my earnings from there into my business account here. How did you do your taxes there?

Surry Hills is all good but bear in mind there are a couple of brothels there.

What other areas would you recommend inner city? I have an appointment with a relocation agent in few days to discuss my requirements. I’m very anxious about not being able to get a rental because of being a sex worker. Do I juts tell them I’ll be looking to work in a brothel? I’m actually going to be working independently from this rental. Could I get thrown out if I use it for incalls even if it’s just me on my own?

Although in Australia it is legal to be a hooker I would not be telling a potential landlord what you do for a living x.

Chippendale is also a fantastic area!

The ATO has details on taxes, there is a tax free threshold (very similar to the UK).

Escorting is 100% legal in NSW and VIC (varies state by state) but as with the UK, I wouldn't disclose to landlord.

Domain.com.au and RealEstate.com.au are the best options for accommodation - they will both have the same properties, choose one based on the interface you choose. Once you've used these you will hate the lack of filtering options on UK property websites.

There is also a similar organisation to SAFE called RedFiles, would recommend you join that. RedFiles and the providers section of ScarletBlue (most popular advertising site in Australia) have a lot of information on companies that are sex worker recommended, especially accountants and lawyers!

Best of luck.
