Bearing in mind you've seen him before without incident, is it not possible that this man could have had some kind of genuine emergency come up which meant he couldn't/forgot to get in touch with you, and certainly not talk to you on the phone? You had no way of knowing where he was or who else was with him and yet you rang him anyway?
