Would you go for a cheap simple template site?
« on: 17 October 2008, 02:35:27 pm »
Having seen some of the new girls struggling with their first websites, I've been considering offering a service aimed at that market.

My idea would be to provide websites powered by wordpress. I'd make a template or two that would be suitable for an escort website and could be customised with the fonts and colours you like. Once the site is up, you'd be able to change your text and even add new pages easily.

The sites would be simple and easily accessible, no flash or anything like that. I wouldn't sort out your listings, although I'd add banners if necessary. SEO isn't my area so I can only offer a few basics there.

I was thinking of charging ?10 to set up a site and ?5/month to keep it running. If you want your own domain you'd pay the registration fee (which is pretty cheap).

Is this something that some of you would be interested in, or would have been interested in when you started? Please don't say yes to be polite or something since it'll take a bit of effort to design the template.

Its a good idea - especially if it is the one that you can blog on.  I have just got th 69 design template fopr ?30 a month - but im not convinced its going to be worth the investment.  Early days yet as only had it a week.  I suppose i only need 1/2 a booking off it and it pays for itself.

The price is definitely better then 69 design, and to be honest I really don't rate 69's templates for what you are paying. I think personally I'm past that stage and am now looking toward getting a pro site maybe with flash, but I am certain there'd still be a solid market for it. For people just starting out, an inexpensive easy to use template created By an escort for an escort would be very appealing. I think it sounds a good idea. x

Yes yes yes.  you know i would  :D

However, i think the ?10 set up is selling yourself short.  you could and should, make this rate more worthwhile to do.  Even if you charged between ?30 and ?50 and offered the arranging of domain name included.  I dont think you necessarily need to offer to do the banners for people (thats rich coming from me!!!!) but you could definately provide step by step instructions that make sense for things like that.

And dont put any crazy ladies on your templates  ;)

I don't know much about PAYG sites but this sounds really expensive - you will fork out as much as I paid for my site (which was custom designed and all-in with no ongoing costs) in 5 months! I think Anika's idea sounds much better, and I agree that the upfront fee should be more than ?10 - I don't think this is enough.

Brilliant idea Anika Mae.

I currently have a payg site which in hindsight at ?30 a month is not economical, but ?5 a month would definitely be more appealing and I think many would go for it.

Lol - had two clients in the last 12 hrs off my new template at my higher rate  so apart from the fact that I would not have got these bookings otherwise, the additional ?30 from each has paid the two montghs minimum subscription!

Maybe worth it after all

I was pondering doing something like this and, yes, I think Wordpress is a good choice for this sort of thing.

Unfortunately, a sexual health charity has failed to pay its hosting bill, so various things are having to be moved to another host and the one I am most tempted by has an ambiguous acceptable use policy which may be sniffy about such sites. I'll doubtless see if they understand the legal situation.

If the interest is there, go for it. I would make it clear that prices at this level involve the minimum of hand-holding (not that you get much with some more expensive ones). If you more of the benefits of my wisdom on this, do let me know :)

am now looking toward getting a pro site maybe with flash,

Don't underestimate how annoying Flash-based sites are to people who are doing their 'shopping' at work - many companies either block it or the animation slows everything down when people are on a Citrix or similar-based networked system. I used to be able to tell when someone else in the building was looking at a Flash site: everything else slowed to a crawl because of this.

Lots of mobiles don't do it properly either.

Even at home, there's a reason why the FlashBlock addon for the Firefox browser (lets you only see the bits of Flash you actually need, i.e. not the ads) is so popular.

I'm considering switching to exmasters. It's the first host I've come across that is adult-friendly and seems to be widely well-regarded. I just need to find out how annoying they're going to be about mySQL limits and whether being partly US-based will cause problems with regards to hooker talk.

THAT is a really excellent point and one I hadn't considered, Thank you! (And also, flash sites are more pricey, so thank you for saving me some pennies xx)

What would your template sites be like Anika? Are they going to be single page like the 69 design ones or multiple pages? x

Multiple pages, with the freedom to add extra ones whenever you like. As far as designing and hosting goes it makes very little difference whether there's one page or 20.

I ask because I read 'The punters or "Visitors" spent most of the time on 2 pages, front page or the Home Page, and the Gallery. Thus any Independent escort website that contains more then 4 pages just makes the punter or visitors with too much choices and they end up leaving your site even not knowing where your contact details are.'

I wonder if having several pages, too many pages, or having just one page makes a big difference.

If the templates look pro then I'd definitely go for one after all I think, and would be happy to pay more than 10? too!! I didn't want one of the 69 design templates as it looked like they were just one page.  I don't want to splash out several hundred pounds right now, I need to start earning more first, but I also want something polished and professional looking enough so I can pay for ads and have a good site for my advertising. xx

You're right, most guys seem to want to see a few pictures and then call, which is why I finally relented and made my cribsheet (even that doesn't stop people calling me without a clue, which is why I'm trying not to have my phone number available anywhere other than my website).

It's a good idea to make all the essential information easily accessible, but don't be put off writing more if you want to. Some of my more regular-inclined clients have told me how much they enjoyed reading my site before they decided to book me.
