Working with two different agencies?
« on: 27 April 2011, 07:06:01 pm »
Hmmm,  I think I might be getting a little bit over-eager here as I enter into this business, and I'd like some of your perspectives on the situation :)

I recently decided to become an escort (I'm from Ontario, Canada so the laws are similar to the UK). I had an interview with one escort agency which appears to be extremely reputable and safe, and was hired on the spot. However, my photoshoot is coming up on Friday and I'm extremely nervous that I don't have the right kind of body for the job. My b*oobs aren't quite as perky as the other girls and I feel like I'm a bit too large as well (I'm probably an average of 2-3 pant sizes bigger than the average girl on the site). They haven't seen me nude yet and I'm paranoid that they're going to tell me I'm not suitable once the clothes come off (please tell me this is irrational, I realize I'm being a bit nuts right now but I'm just so scared).

In light of this, I applied to another escort agency in Toronto who represents girls that have similar body types to mine.  I applied yesterday and she called me back today, leaving a message to get back to her. I was thinking I could work for both agencies to help maximize my income, and if the first agency doesn't work out because I don't fit in, I can stick with the second one.

However I really have no idea how logical or rational I'm being in all of this. First of all I don't think that in reality my looks are so awful that I'll get kicked out of my first agency, and I recognize that I'm being paranoid but it's difficult to stop feeling that way. Secondly, I'm not sure if agencies look down on this sort of thing. Should I be honest with both agencies and say that I'm working for both? Or will they look down on that and see it as some kind of detriment to the business? Or do they have no business knowing whether or not I'm doing work for another agency and it's in my rights to keep it to myself?

Any stories or advice would be greatly appreciated! Again I haven't started yet so I might be imagining a whole bunch of stuff that's not really logical at all.

I don't work through an agency but if I was going to sign up to one I would go for the one that makes me feel more comfortable, and that's not just the pictures on the website, but how the owner spoke to me and how they were going to vet the clients, the fees they charge etc.

But the only way to see who will give you the most business would be to try both of them, but not sure about at the same time as they could cause problems esp if they have different rates for you!  I don't know if you have review sites/punter forums in Canada, but they can be a mine of information on what clients think of the service provided by agencies.

Just remember if the owner wants money up front, walk away as fast as you can. (or sex, audition etc).

Oh and hardly anyone thinks they have a perfect body, we all have our hang ups that no one else ever even notices.  And most of the pictures are probably airbrushed anyway, so don't worry.

So far, they both seem very reputable and are entirely female owned and operated. It's okay if they have different rates, I've never worked any job that's payed me more than minimum wage so it wont be a big deal. I'm mostly worried that if one of them finds out that I'm working for the other, that will be an issue for them for some reason.

Thanks for the reassurance too :)

Yes, they might be annoyed if they find out. They also won't like it if you're less reliable because you're trying to deal with two agencies at once, obviously. It's quite common for people to work for more than one agency to get the work they want, but as you don't know how busy you will be with either and you're new so juggling could be difficult, I think you're better off starting with just one. If you decide you're happy to start with the first you could keep the second as an option until you've done the photoshoot, if that makes you feel better.

The different rates may not be problematic for you, but as I think Jas mentioned, if punters find the same girl is listed for $200 on one agency site and $300 on another, they won't like it and will obviously not book you through the more expensive one so that agency won't like you either! It depends a bit on the punter community (forums etc) in your area - they can be very important in the US, I think, but in places where sex work is legal there seems to be less need for tight communities of clients+prossies. But it could (at worst) somewhat tarnish your shiny new reputation at an early stage because some people might automatically think of the most negative explanation (that you are somehow trying to trick people) rather than the right explanation which is that you just want to spread yourself around a bit. :) So watch out!

I would do one agency at a time. For example, when you first join an agency you'll get a rush of bookings from all the newbie-hunters so you'll want to be maximally available to take advantage of that. Then when that dies down, you'll really find out for sure whether an agency has your best interests at heart (do they still market their "old girls" or do they just let them fall by the wayside as more and more new girls join?) and if they don't, then that is the ideal time to leave them and join a new agency, or join a second agency in secret, or set up as an indie.

But do bear in mind that punters are not stupid so they will often know as much about escorts' careers as the escorts themselves; they can quite easily 'follow' you around the Internet if you're popping up on different sites with similar pictures - and if they see you have different rates in different places, again, they might think you less professional and possibly less reliable. Sometimes I think I'd like to have a separate indie identity for just massage appointments, but if anyone recognised me they could kick up a bit of a fuss if they decided I was somehow trying to deceive my clients into paying more/less or getting more/less services, so I really don't think it's worth it. It only takes one slightly obsessive stalker-type (he need not even be obsessed with you in particular; certain individuals out there are, it would seem, just obsessed with knowing as much about prossies as they possibly can) to turn a potentially fun opportunity into a total pain in the bum.

There are a lot of guys who like to only see new girls, too, so if they end up seeing the same girl twice because she's lying about being new, it could be a bit awkward!

On the other hand, I am definitely firmly in the "avoid punter forums" camp (if only because I'd rather get valuable feedback from my genuine clients and reading angry rants about sex workers, specific ones or in general, just makes me want to quit working entirely, which isn't good for my bank balance!) so I wouldn't advocate running your entire business based on what certain small groups of backbiters and gossips might say about you on the Internet. That's a direct route to insanity and/or bankruptcy. ;D So if you want to join both agencies at once, do so. But be aware of all of the possible consequences so that you can make a truly informed decision either way.

Okay this is really great advice from everyone, thanks for taking the time to write such detailed and thoughtful responses! :)

EmilyJones, I had never even fathomed your first point before, though it is very simple and makes perfect sense. Shows how much of a nOOb I am! Haha.

I still haven't returned the call of the woman who runs the second agency. To be honest, she sounded like a bit of a snob in her phone message, and hearing her tone of voice made me somewhat uncomfortable. I think for now I will stick with the original agency as they have hired me and I have my photo shoot tomorrow.

It's good to know that I can anticipate a rush of bookings at the beginning, I am looking to put away some money right away and then hopefully get another job towards the end of the summer.

Thanks again everyone!

I have to say I'm qutie envious that you get to experience the giddiness of starting to work in this industry. I miss those days when it was all so new and terribly exciting! The gobs of cash... omg. For a desperately broke girl who was used to working several jobs just to keep afloat and still not be able to afford much, being paid that much for such a short amount of 'work' was like... receiving manna from heaven. LOL. Literally!

I was very worried when I looked at the website of my first agency the girls were all gorgeous with perfect bodies and then i met them in person and felt a bit daft really as they were all really normal not the porn starts I was expecting! Then my pics went up and even though none of us were ever airbrushed I looked great too and could see newbies being wary of me.

I think your best bet is to see how it goes with the first one if it doesnt work pack up your stockings and go to a different agency at leat you will have the first clients out of the way and can go in 100% confident of the industry.....Good Luck!

p.s Agencies will normall tell you outright if they want you to be exclusive to them

I definately learning how things work just by reading your details here. I'm not that confident to think that I'm going to be wanted by loads major agencies. I'm happy to just build up my experience working for a smaller setup at the moment. Ok i'm not going to get any better looking, but i can i can continue to stay in shape and make some improvements in my body shape where I think I need to work.
