Working flat. Small town VS city pros and cons?
« on: 03 September 2017, 10:11:59 am »
I am thinking of getting a working flat around the area I live (15 mile radius) so that it's easy to access and also because the rent is much cheaper than if I head into a bigger city. I'm in the South West so I am close-ish to Bath, Bristol, Salisbury.

I'd just like some advise from anyone who has maybe worked in both a smaller town and a bigger city please.
I know a bigger city will incur bigger overheads, have more clients (probably) but also more competition. On the other hand a smaller town will be cheaper, less clients (maybe) but less competition.

Do you think its possible to have enough business in a smaller town? I'm sure the answer is yes because I can't imagine all sex workers just live in cities/large towns - im kind of looking for some first hand reassurance I think or advise from people who have manybe done both and can give a little insight please

Im fully aware that no two people are the same and it all depends on the individual - I'd just appreciate some perspective please :)

If it were me I'd prefer the smaller town as I'm part time and low turnover.
Yes bigger cities may give you more punters but there's loads more competition.
Higher rent in a big city equals more pressure on me to find more money...no thanks
I'd prefer to be a big fish in a small pool than the other way around.

I am in a small town and I do ok. I do not like really busy cities and I would hate the pressure of having to make extra each day in a city before turning a profit overheads are definitely lower in smaller places.
But everyone is different if you specialise in a area of sw you might struggle in a small town but if you are mainstream I think you would be fine in either

This is on my mind, too, as I'm in the initial stages of planning my own location.

My general feeling is that transport links are most important in terms of clients. I'm in a small town, but near a biggish city, and more to the point, only a five-minute drive from a junction of the M25. So I get both locals shuttling around the area and commuters who are driving round the M25. I'm also within a 15-minute walk of a tube/train station, and I get some visitors from London that way.

I think smaller towns are fine if the road links are good - a lot of drivers avoid city centres. On the other hand, cities are good for men who will walk or get a bus, train or cab. They're also a bit more anonymous.

If this is just going to be a working flat and you're not going to live there, I would prioritise a). being close to a major road, b). free on-street parking nearby, and c). both the flat and the area being generally 'nice'.

Well I'm a bit late to the party and it does depend what you mean by small, but my town has around 60,000 people and I do absolutely fine (despite being in flagrant breach of at least one unbreakable rule by not being on or near a main road either :D)*

It's also possible to travel to cities if you fancy a change for a few days, don't forget :).

* although it has the longest railway station seat in the world :D

Thanks Amy! :-)

Google tells me my town has around 16,000 and I do have larger towns within 7 miles so I'm certain that will be plenty

Now on to find something suitable!

I am on the outskirts of a city in a small town and I do great.. the main thing is easy access from motorways and being accessible.  Many people find it easier than going into the city.
