Been bleeding lightly for TWELVE days now due to new contraception. I've been working with nothing in (wear a super heavy tampon then wash/baby wipe inside myself just before sex) and it's left a barely noticeable red tint on the condom. I just try to remove it for them. It's driving me crazy! No one ever wants to finger me except when I'm on! Got a ?5 sea sponge from boots. Going to insert that and see if it's less messy. Going to the doctors on Monday to sort it out.

Guys who have removed the condom themselves have either not noticed or not cared about the bit of blood. I wash/baby wipe the inside of my vagina again inbetween rounds to stop the blood really coming out. I experimented with the sea sponge today and there was no blood at all on the condom. It was an hour and a half booking and I went to the bathroom to check for blood and there was nothing getting past the sponge. He fingered me and didn't feel it because I shoved it right up around the cervix.

I tried the coil, and had serious cramps, heavier periods and infections. I'm aware that the sponge won't have an effect on my period or make my cramps any worse, but am concerned about the infection side of things

What kind of coil did you use?  The copper IUD?  Or the Mirena IUS?  I was thinking of getting the IUS when my periods come back (they are MIA at the moment as they are very sensitive to even the tiniest bit of weight loss!) because it it is the lowest hormonal does of any hormone-containing contraceptive and supposedly makes periods a lot lighter or stop completely (unlike the IUD which makes them worse) - but all these things have mixed reviews!

I get horrible period bloat and generally feel like an inflated whale 2 days before and for the first 2 days of mine.  I only do erotic massage when I'm 'on'

I have had the mirena coil for a couple of years. Have not had a period at all in that time and no stomach cramps or anything.

If you suffer from heavy periods you can get something from your Dr called tranexamic acid. Check it out on line it stops the bleeding or is supposed to it worked for me as I have had horrible heavy flow after some abnormal cell in cervix treatment. But I was prescribed them years ago when the injection just made me bleed

I suffer from depression and each type of the pill has had adverse effects on my mental health so the pill is out for me.

The sponge is too big and weird. I can barely fit in a penis half the time in there anything else and a penis is just too much.

Only thing that worked for me is Tranxemic Acid. I love it so much.

You should consider a Mirena coil, Selena - a bit uncomfortable to fit, but it's brief, and they're worth their weight in platinum (being tiny, gold isn't enough...) I have fairly light periods so a normal copper IUD is fine for me, but the Mirenas can cut periods dramatically.

Kay - the Mirena coil is the same drug as the minipill so that will lead to the same problems for Selena. It's also almost impossible to fit unless you have had a child.

That's not my experience at all. Both my old gyno and the new one regularly fit childless women with IUDs (I have copper myself), and I know multiple other people who use Mirena despite being childfree and under the age of 26. Considering how common Mirena is around here, it's a far cry from impossible.

Mids, as Lynx said you can easily have an IUD if you haven't had children, it's just perhaps a little more painful - the sounding and then insertion via the cervix is a very specific and unusual type of pain, but bearable! I know from personal experience, having had it done twice. I took a diazepam and co-codamol the first time, nothing the second.

And it is the same drug, but as it's only released into the uterus and cervix, it doesn't act systemically, thus you don't get the same level of side-effects as with the oral product.

I'll hold my hand up and say that while they're not for everyone, I'm very pro IUDs: no drugs, no side-effects (bar the initial discomfort and heavier periods for 4-5 months with the normal copper one), and they're virtually foolproof so long as they don't dislodge - and that normally happens in the first few weeks, when you should go back for a check-up anyway. Even if it were to fail at the first hurdle and a rogue sperm got through, no egg/embryo can implant. And they last 5-10 years!

You cut the sponge to whatever size you need! There's no way I'm suggesting that you fit the whole sea sponge - the size of a large man's palm- into your vagina.
I'm glad you found something that works for you though.

Sorry to sound dumb but you seem to be pretty knowledgeable on iuds, with the Minera is there also a chance or heavy bleeding for the first few months? Once I get my periods back I'm thinking of having one fitted as I have pretty much the same issues with the pill/sponges as selena. Can't get a strict answer out my nurse. Experiences anyone?

I didn't say you couldn't have an IUD without having children. I said the Mirena coil is almost impossible to fit if you haven't had children. Note the word 'almost'.

Mids, OK, but I'd still argue that it's actually fairly easy...  :)

Happy, I don't know personally about the Mirena, but yes, I think you possibly have heavier/irregular bleeding for a while (probably not as long as with a normal IUD), and then your periods will start to lessen.
