work phones
« on: 27 July 2010, 01:03:08 pm »
I noticed a bit of discussion about useful work phones on another thread, but didn't want to go off topic so thought I'd start a new thread as it might be helpful for others too.
I recently bought myself a new phone for work, but it was a complete waste of money. It's a pretty basic Nokia, which I thought would be ok, but I hate it!
As Emily Jones said on the other thread, Carphone Warehouse don't advertise the kind of features we need and I found the assistants in there a complete waste of space when I tried to explain the sort of things I needed in a phone.  My private phone is an iPhone, which I love and it has some features I would love in a work phone, like threaded texts,  but it seems very extravagant to get another one just for work as I don't need  all the bells and whistles.
So, am about to ditch the one I bought recently and get a better one, but my head is boggled with it all. Any ideas?

It's true - my basic Nokia is a pile of crap when it comes to being properly organised for indie work. I need to be able to save hundreds of numbers with details like names associated/number of bookings made/crimes against sanity committed/accent notes/services preferred - I don't know, I could go on and on and sound more OCD as I go, but frankly, I only escort part time so don't want to have to spend the rest of the day memorising which weirdos call at which times and say what stuff. I'm not very good at remembering which are brilliant clients (VIP! ;D) or which are perfectly fine either, and it would be better if their phone number(s) could just be attached to all this information and then I wouldn't have to think about it when trying to get on with my 'regular' life.

Not to mention sophisticated blocking of texts (with auto response), withheld numbers (ditto) and perhaps even multiple voicemail messages that you can save and switch through! Or am I getting a bit James Bond now??

Anyway, in another thread here, Blue recommended an Android phone and it looks really tempting. iPhones don't allow call barring, I don't think, as any apps to do so seem to always involve jailbreaking the phone which voids its warrantee. I had a quick Google and one Android phone comes up for about ?200 from the various usual online retailers (this one mentions 'practically unlimited' address book fields and call records). I think I'm going to save up - my crappy Nokia has literally run out of space to save new Contacts! At least it came with ?10 free credit, back in the day (and does everyone know about the Tesco PAYG simcard that triples your credit for free - pay ?10 receive ?30 worth of credit, etc?).

Not looking forward to being able to receive picture messages, though. :-X That had better be blockable, too! And I don't know how much even minimal 3G usage might cost on a PAYG sim but I can imagine being horrified when I do find out.

Ha. ;D

Hopefully my snazzy new future-phone will block incoming cock-picture messages and auto-respond with this:

I write everything in a notebook instead of on a mobile.
For example anytime a client books me they get saved in my phone under their first name or adultwork name and then I'll write in a notebook what services they liked an any other information I might need to remember if they rebook (everyone is put in alphabetical order in the notebook so I can find them quickly).

If a timewaster contacts me they get saved in my phone as time waster 1 or time waster 2 and so on.
And then in the notebook I"ll list them all in numerical order and write a sentence or two about why they are a timewaster so that I remember for the future.

Sounds like a really tedious system but it works for me and it means I can just have a cheap phone for work and keep my iPhone for private calls.

I do the notebook thing aswell. Also keep details from the warning boards that I have printed out and stuck in.

Blimey, you are both very organised, sammy and Amber! Afraid am not at that level and if the phone is ringing a lot it's hard to keep track. That's my excuse, anyway!

I'd only put stuff into the notebook if they had actually booked. Just a sentence or so to say how the booking went and what they liked.

Or if I get a dodgy phone call from someone I'll put it in the book.

If someone simply calls with an enquiry then I wouldn't write anything down.

Hope that makes sense

It does, but I used my iphone for work for a bit. It was amazing! For example, I got a text from a guy asking me for a booking and said his name was John. Because of the threaded text thing I saw that he had asked me for a booking using a different name some time before.
Sod it, I think I just need to splash out for an expensive work phone and ignore the camera, internet, and all that sort of stuff.
But seriously, there must be a sizeable market for a phone that performs  basic phone and text functions but does it as well as an android phone/ iphone?  We aren't the only ones with 2 phones..

When I retire I'm going to open an exhibition of cock pictures, I swear.

I don't think The Tate will be too keen though...

LG KU 990 has all you need, baring withheld numbers, you can also place numbers into folders and add the folder to barred list. Then if time waster will try to call you will not even see it, it will completely barred. You can create folders and add number, make notes etc. etc...

He came in the morning and woke me up with killer instinct. Wish I could stop this now.

As already mentioned I did mention an android phone, I have an HTC hero (contract ?25 p/m unlimited text, net, 800mins)

I only have free apps on it but these are some of the useful tools...

DGaway ( auto responds to texts / calls or both with a message of your choice, if you don't reply to texts it could respond "sorry I only take enquires on the phone" great for when on holiday

Call filter - blocks all withheld calls and can also block individual numbers

the phone also has google maps and is similar to an iphone.
