Yeah, I'm not British but I am an EU citizen - they made me scan in my national ID card (passport would also work but mine was expired) and a picture of me holding up a piece of paper with the date on it. Don't think there's any way around it for non-British citizens.

Er, none of that. There's a part of the site where they ask you to upload your pictures directly to the site, your verification photo and ID. Sorry I can't link, but I didn't send my documents through email, I uploaded them directly, waited a few hours and then got an email sent to the email I signed up to AW with telling me that they had been accepted and all was well.
