What to look for in a new house/working from home
« on: 13 July 2014, 11:35:18 pm »
Hi all

As the topic states I shall be moving shortly and am looking at continuing to work from home. I only see 2 - 3 clients a day max, a few days a week, finishing by 9pm unless a regular. I like ruralish areas, this time looking for a house slightly out on its own, so no problems with neighbours or parking that way lol.

What else would ye consider a necessity to do the job?

Ta in advance

Hi and thanks so much for your reply, I am not nor will i be on a bus route so anyone visiting me needs to drive, the house i have in mind appears to be discreet, with lots of parking and a high hedge around it, which will be great for privacy. I am in a rural area so clients need to follow my directions lol, which I'm good at giving after all this time, going to view it tomorrow, only downside is its not furnished, so apart from my bedroom, the fun room and the sitting room it will take some time to gather furniture. But hey ho its doable lol

If it's the inside you're asking about rather than the outside which all sounds fine, my list would include a combi boiler and a decent shower (preferably in a separate cubicle and not above the bath), somewhere to plumb in and vent a washerdryer depending on how much you plan to work, and a clear route through the to work bedroom without having to go through other rooms.

I'd also want secure, preferable uPVC windows and door even though they're bloody ugly, because they're harder to break into and if you're in a remote-ish spot I'd worry about being targeted by people who think you're sitting on lots of cash.

Being able to spot clients who are on their way, both to the address and to the door not being able to the first leaves you open to having your time wasted time and time again. The second is a security risk.

Being in a rural isolated place sounds great regards avoiding nosy neighbours, but do be aware there's a reason why insurance companies often increase premiums for properties in such locations - it's far easier for burglers(and those posing as clients) to sneak in and out without being seen, and you are further away from assistance should you need it.

Having a front door with an eyehole or glass window. So you can check they are alone.
