This might sound like a silly question...

How do you guys go about protecting your photos online?

I know the basics like water marking but is there anything else you can do to decrease the likelihood of your photos being used without your permission?

I know to a certain extent, it's a fact of life in this industry but still, I seem to suffer from the problem more than most. For the life of me I can't figure out why  :-[

I think the watermark is the best method.  I know it is slow and laborious but well worth it.

There are so many different free downloads now that you can use to lift pix - even from AW - so best to cover yourself with watermark.
Beauty is nothing to do with having a pretty face.
It is about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart,
And most importantly a beautiful soul.

A watermark can be applied to an entire batch of photos automatically, so it shouldn't be laborious.

Do you have photoshop?

Thanks for the replies. I don't have photoshop, I use Umark. It's not too bad as I only have about 14 photos to do. I've removed all the ones from AW (which were already water marked with my name). This time I'm going to add tile water marks to them.

I have read somewhere that using photoshop or gimp or something like this that you can add a new layer to your image and change the opacity and save it and use it but if people download they will have a blurred un-useable photo because of the 2nd layer...  Has anyone tried this?

This isn't true hon.

Whilst yes, when editing a photo there can be several layers, the photo is compressed to a JPEG when it is saved, so that cannot be undone.

If you WANTED to save a photo and to be able to go back to it later to see the different layers and edit them, you'd have to save it as a PSD.

So, don't worry about that, as only compressed files can be uploaded to AW.
