Best Condoms?
« on: 13 February 2013, 10:15:49 pm »
Hi again,

Sorry I have posted quite a few questions today! I am just so happy to have found a place for all the questions and concerns I have about my work.

This one is in regards to condoms. I find that the thin ones break! I have already had a few accidents and I don't want it to happen again.

Are there any preferences? Brands? Latex? Non Latex?  I currently use the regular blue box of Trojans.....not sure if there is anything better?

Also for lubrication.....I find that some of them give me yeast infections....I was told that coconut oil is good for non-latex condoms?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Bubblefizz I don't know whether you're in the US or in Canada, but either way we're mostly in the UK so our brand names aren't the same as the ones you'll be used to seeing :).

Trojans are available here but not that widely useed, in my experience. I use a non latex brand called Skyns made by Mates - you might know them as Lifestyles (black box with gold writing - I bought some when I waqs last in NY but I can't remember whether they were still called Skyns there). Some people like Durex but I've never found them to fit properly and they are the only ones I've ever had break. It's really down to personal preference.

Don't put coconut oil on your bits, for Christ's sake. There are many, MANY proper lubricants available that are designed for the purpose - a good silicone one (if you would rather have an oil than a water base) is Gun Oil - another we have is Pjur, but I don't know if you have it there. Silicone lube is compatible with all condoms and doesn't smell or taste of anything, although a thicker water based one can be better for things like anal if you offer it. Again, it's personal preference and trial and error - buy a couple of small packs and give them a try.

Thank you Amy! Yes, I am in Canada  but I have heard of Skyns....I will give them a try as well as the Gun Oil.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do when you have had "accidents"?

Thanks so much Amy!  :)

I don't know what you mean by 'accidents', Bubblefizz?

If you mean a condom breaking, they don't, or at least they haven't since I last used Durex and the last time I trusted those crappy things was in fortunately my personal life, not work. I've had the odd one slip off when a punter has pulled out (and the trick there is just to carefully remove it with the open end pointing up and away from you) but if you know how to put them on properly, breakage really shouldn't be an issue. I haven't had one break in many years, and I use a lot of condoms :D.

If it happens, stop as soon as you realise and get yourself along to the GUM clinic in a week or ten days time to get checked out - there's not much point going before because most infections need that long to show up in tests. You'll possibly have to go back again at a later date for an HIV test but basically that's it. And don't work in the meantime, just in case :).

If you've had a 'few' accidents using brand name condoms, it's probably time to look at what you're doing in terms of how you're using them.
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

Also did you know that the size of condoms you should use is based on girth not length? I was 30 before I learnt this!
Don't know if sizing is the same for the brands you get in Canada but here the average size you get is for girths of 12-13cm when the penis is fully erect. Less than 12cm you need slim sizes and more than 13cm you need large.
Of course whipping out a tape measure just before you put one on is probably not an option! Interesting anyway though.

Personally I like Skins condoms. I find they dont have that revolting smell like some Durex ones do. There is nothing worse than if you have had sex with a client who's worn a latex Durex and then asks you to give him OWO... the taste has made me retch before...ugh....

Amy is right, DO NOT use coconut oil as it will affect the condom greatly. Any KY jelly I find is good, as I too get yeast infections (and cystitis!) if I use any other flavoured/tingled/heated lubes.

Hope this helps :)

BubbleFizz, I've been happy with using 3 different condoms (narrow, average and girthy); Durex (slim fit ones...not sure of their name though), Mates Natural and Mates King Size. My only complaint is that the lube used in the Durex ones tastes horrible; the lube in Mates tastes sweet. As for added lube, I found that Durex dries quickly and goes sticky which is horrible, but Liquid Silk is lovely. Regarding breakages, I've only had 2 split on me in the last 13 years, and think that was because I got dry but we kept going. Since then I always apply lube if the sex is prolonged and I get dry, and I always use a bit of lube on my outside to stop that snaggy feeling at the start of sex if my lips are dry.

If a condom splits after the man has ejaculated, my GUM clinic advised not to douche but to squeeze the cum out (imagine trying to have a poo) with your vaginal muscles. Then get a STI screen done. Even if he's not com inside you get screened.
