1 hr turns into 2 hrs bookings...
« on: 14 June 2012, 02:06:34 pm »
It struck me the other day, if the guy has an hour then wants another hour, is he likely to assume that you'll charge the first hour at ur normal hourly rate, then just add on the difference to make it up to two hours?

Is that how most people do it or do you charge and hour then an hour??

Could be a good way of a guy getting 2 hours for a reduced price is what it struck me.... (cynical old fart that I am!!).

What do you guys all do??

Not sure what you mean by this.  If your normal 2 hour rates is cheaper than 2 one hours would it not have been easier for him to just book the two hour rate in the first place, or if your 2 hour rate is 2x1 hour then it will be the same price no matter how he books so extending is not going to be cheaper in either case.

It?s up to how you want to play it. A lot of girls (myself included) tend to give discounts on longer appointments. Others charge a standard rate and then just multiply that by the number of hours a guy wants. I use the sliding scale method because it encourages longer bookings, takes into account that whatever I need to account for (rent, advertising, supplies, etc) is already covered in the first hour (otherwise I?d charge a higher rate), so any additional hour on top of the first is going to be pure profit and so I don?t begrudge making it cheaper for the customer. Win-win.  :)

hi Dani what I mean is, if a guy books for an hour, you're so bloomin' fab he then wants another hour that he hadn't booked for, you have no further bookings that will clash so you go ahead with a further hour.

So having paid say ?150 for the hour (and knowing that your 2 hr rate is 240), for the second hour do you charge

The difference between 150 and 240

Or do you charge ?150 for the first hour and ?150 for the unexpected second hour.

That was what I was getting at. xx

I'd charge the standard 2 hour rate. Though if it's the difference of something as little as ?10 though I don't think that would be a significant difference to sway the client's decision.

Two hours is 2x ?one hour. As they have booked an hour, then during the session they ask to extend it's only reasonable. Unless you advertise a discount for two hours and that they have seen that pricing detail. Even if they have, you can say 'old ad' and hustle for the full fee, dropping back only if they decline.

On my pricing:
One hour is ?one hour (obviously)
Two hours is 2x ?one hour.
But, three hours is only 2x ?one hour plus ?50.* And includes desert.#
See what I'm doing there?
The idea is to get them to compare 2 hours to 3 hours,
then realise 3 hours is only a little more than two hours and go for that.
Which is brill when they then only stay 90 minutes.  :)

*The actual total ?amount for three hours is actually an amount I am happy to receive in exchange for a three hour session. The two hour and one hour fee are worked backwards from this.

#Desert is a teaser to make them think the low price for three hours even includes something special. What desert is can be up to you. Wind-down massage, double showering, key fob with your ad photo and phone number  :o    ;D  You decide.  All marketing

That is a cunning pricing strategy! I am just reading a book by one of world's leading behavioural economists, Dan Ariely, for my day job in marketing, and he suggests using exactly this pricing strategy. The key is to offer 1 cheap option (the 1 hr booking) and two more expensive offers that are similar, but out of which one is clearly superior. The mind focuses then on those options that are similar and compares them! The same is true for other thing, too - say, if you were on an agency website, the best place to have your photo would be between a girl who looks completely different to you and a girl who is similar to you, but slightly less attractive (as again, the mind starts comparing the two similar options).

For people who don't already use this trick: If you don't want to change your prices, you could always add a new bad option to make your preferred option look better.

For instance, if you offer 1 hour for 100 and 2 hours for 160, you could add an option of 90 mins for 150. It is clearly a shit option and no one will ever book it, but it is likely to get people to book 2 hrs instead of 1 (as 2 hours looks like such a good deal in comparison).

Yep you got it!  I'm using EXACTLY that strategy.
1 hour = ?x
2 hours = ?x ?x which makes sense.  Now the mind will compare those two things and will figure 1 hour is better as it's half the price.
Now we add 3 hours =?x ?x +a small amount extra money to go from 2 to 3 hrs.
The client's mind is drawn to the three hours specifically because it is only slightly more than two hours plus it has an intriguing bonus.
End result is he will automatically be comparing two hours to three hours
rather than one hour to two hours.
Which is exactly what we are manipulating here.
He may only want 1 hour and only have time for 1 hour,
but he will mainly dwell on the 3 hour session option.
