Evie, in response to your original question about SEO - some things to remember. SEO is all about getting top rankings in search engines such as Google, yahoo etc etc - sites based on "free" hosting such and raresite, moonfruit etc etc wiill not get high, if any, search engine rankings. This is down to the fact that search engines view "relevancy" as highly important - free site hosts are deemed as relatively unimportant, rightly or wrongly. Please also remember that sites presented using the language Flash will not get search engine rankings. If you're unsure as to whether your site is Flash based, right click over an image on the page. If the word "movie" appears on the drop down menu, chances are it's Flash or Flash based. Most importantly, good SEO is all about the content. Make sure you name the locations you cover in the main text of your page. For example, if you're based in Surrey, mention Surrey, Guildford etc etc. Put them in
bold too. Search engines can only index text that is there. Meta-Tags - these are important, make sure you don't mention keywords that aren't in your website text, you'll get penalised for this. Place the locations (mentioned above) in the keywords and the description of the site.
URL or domain name. Again, this can significantly impact your rankings. Try to use a key location in the name, eg Surreysue.co.uk. Preferably choose a .co.uk name rather than a .com Most computers know they are in the UK and therefore default to localised versions of the search engines. Google.com is NOT the same as Google.co.uk
SEO is all about the text actually on your website. Content is King as they say. Anyone who says they'll SEO your site for you, do two things. Ask for proof of previous SEO projects click
http://www.alternetive.co.uk/reports/N&D%20By%20Engine.pdf for example. Also ask them if they can provide regular reports showing how well the SEO is working. Many people forget this aspect, after all, it's always good to keep on eye on your investment. Also remember, to SEO your site properly, they'll need access to your domain name admin area to publish any changes. Probably a good idea to meet them first - it's a trust thing. As with all walks of life, if someone try's to blind you with science to sell you something to the point you don't understand, be wary. If someone says they can guarantee a position on Google, walk away - it can't be done.
Finally good SEO costs money. There's no two ways about it. Done properly, there's a lot to do
http://www.alternetive.co.uk/reports/Optimisation%20Report%20-%20Full%20Example.pdfIt's a repetitive and time consuming task to produce good SEO, you get what you pay for.
Having said that, when done properly, it's also the most cost effective advertising that can be bought, bar none. Google is THE number one website on the internet. Getting high rankings on it absolutely pays dividends.
Hope this helps..........
