Girls.....
« on: 19 January 2009, 06:37:19 pm »
......Just wondering, is there an effective way of working around that dreaded time of the month (other than just taking the pill back to back....is this safe?) or is it best just to let nature take its course and have a break? :S

There have been a number of threads on this subject, in a nutshell:

taking the pill back to back is said to not be dangerous as the inventors actually introduced the break for psychological effect, so that us silly girlies would feel taking the pill was still part of a natural cycle. Thoughsome people argue against that.

You can go on longterm contraception: 3 monthly injections, implants or IUD, normally they result in your periods stopping all together whilst you take them.

You can use sponges, I think the most widely used one is called a beppy sponge.

There are 'caps' called mooncups, which go over the entrance of your uterus like a diaphram and collect the blood in them, which you can empty out as frequently as you like.

I used to be on the injections and now have an IUD and love it, as I have always hated having periods, but you have to try and see what suites you best. I know between us there are ladies who use each of the methods about , so I'm sure they will tell you why what they use works for them.

You cant have sex with the cup.

I tend to have very short, heavy periods and have used beppy sponges.  I was pretty nervous and didnt really trust them but they are bloody brilliant.  I cant find them in any shops though so bought them on line, just google and you will find them.

I'm not a big fan of messing around with my hormones so i dont know about the others.  Irecently went on the pill but im already thinking about coming off it as i just dont like the idea of it and never have but others think its great so its difficult to decide really.

Anyway, beppys for when you need to work.  they go quite far in so i shouldnt think any guy would ever feel it and it takes a bit of practice to work out how to get them out with out bursting a blood vessle but it gets easier.

Do.  I hate normal everyday tampons as i knew someone when i was really young who died of that toxic shock thing so i hate stuff like that but if you have to work during your period they are brilliant, and much more comfortable than even normal tampons.  I was a bit shocked at the size of them when i got them out of the pack but like i said before, once you get used to inserting and removing them they are great for their purpose.  Bit bloody expensive though.

That's partly the reason why I ended up getting the depo jab. Beppy sponges are the best imo, but they aren't cheap. They're bloody handy though.

Mirena coil (an IUD paired with Progesterone hormone) pretty much erased my periods. They are also one of the most secure way to avoid pregnancies (should the condom burst) and once inserted you don't need to worry about contraception for the next 5 years. Except for condoms of course.

But it was bloody murder to get it in my uterus, AAAAGGHHH!!!  :-[

That's the one I got about 18 months ago and I find it great and I guess I was lucky as inserting it wasn't a problem and didn't hurt.

Is progesterone the same as the mini-pill? I'm on the combined one but they'll not let me have it much longer now that I'm knocking on a bit  ;D, and I thought of trying the mini pill instead, but am worried about the side effects. If it works OK I might try the Mirena myself (although now I'm terrified of how they're going to wangle the bloody thing in  :o)

Ok, Dr cassie is in the house again:

The POP is the mini pill and actually the side effects are not that bad, irregular periods are the most likely - the oestrogen in the combined pill causes more side effects.

One thing that was hugely problematic for me was to remember to take it every day and at around the same time every day. Otherwise you are not protected. When I tried it I was working on a rotating 3 shift system, so getting up and going to bed at different times every 4 days. I just didn't have the discipline.

The IUD was no problem at all, the worsed part for me was having that damn speculum shoved up there. I goes in like a ship in a bottle with all the sticky out bits folded down. Don't have your GP do it, go to the GUM clinic, they do it regularly and know what they are doing.

AAAAGGHHH!!!  :-[

This was the bit that was bothering me lol.

So if it is the same hormone, a trial run with the POP should show whether it would be OK. I don't know if I could remember the same time every day though - I have enough trouble with the normal ones (I'm really bloody lax with them because I always use condoms, and it's stupid because they do break, rare though it is).

Yeah, it should be ok, there are some rarer side effects such as a higher risk of ectopic pregnancies, if you do get pregnant and you lose the benefit of breast cancer prevention oestrogen is said to have. I just didn't feel safe as I constantly forgot to take the pill at the same time.

Have you considered the depot shot every three months or the implants?

Personally I love being on the coil, 10 min of discomfort followed by a few of days of period type pain and then no worries for 5 years, bliss!

But each to their own.  :)
