working during August
« on: 17 July 2024, 09:33:29 am »
Hi everyone, what is your experience working in August? I am based in the City of London and occasionally Heathrow and Birmingham.. I'm asking as its summer holidays so I assume clients will be away on holiday. What shall I do?

Not everyone has children or will be away on holidays.
For a lot of people it’ll be business as usual. I’m not in London but I’ve never noticed much of a difference in summer holidays Vs other months.

I agree, and I've been based in the CoL for almost five years. August is a good busy month in my experience; as above, people still have to go to work, punters don't all have school age children and not everybody goes on holiday in August (and if they do, they're not going to be away for all of it).

According to the .gov website 615,000 people work in the City, so if we estimate half of those are women (and realistically it's likely to be fewer than that) that leaves 307500 men of working age - potential punters. Even if 90% of them went on holidays at the same time (unlikely) that leaves 30,750 and if we use the old stat that one in ten men punt, that gives us 3075, or roughly one hundred a day, every day, for a month. Even I can't shag that many :D

Plus plenty of people are travelling into London, unlike a lot of other places. I wouldn't worry too much :)

Some of my clients don't have kids and go on holiday in off peak times when it's less busy and not too hot.

It slows down where I live so I try to keep my August bills as low as possible.

I find I have fewer advance bookings first week of the school holidays and last week of August.

But this means I can accept more shorter notice, as well as get on with other things. Also means I'm turning less away which (constantly saying I can't offer a booking, dealing with the I'm gutted/trying to persuade me) can be energy sapping. I've booked a few days out and days off during this period.
