Can hotel check the CCTV footage on someone's request
« on: 05 June 2023, 11:07:20 pm »
One of my clients didn't register his car at the reception of the hotel I was working in and now he has to pay 100£ fine.
He suggested it's my fault and I should sort it for him with a hotel, I said he is an adult and his parking arrangements are not my responsibility, I don't know why he didn't think to register, nevermind, he was rude about it so I ignored him. He will go to the hotel tomorrow and tell them why he was there, giving my room nr. He doesn't know my name so if hotel calls me I will just deny it. But can he request them to check security footage from the corridor to proof he actually went to my room? I can't deny it then. Any of you knows if they can check the footage on some rando request? Couse I'm hoping it's not so simple, im gonna mail hotel too, but if any of you have insight. It was ihg hotel.

I dont know how long ago it was, but some of those places scrub their security.
Also your allowed visitors! He can’t prove he was their to visit you for XYZ. He’s a bit of An idiot if he’s so happy to just say his business.
Also its his car so his responsibility. Even if he came to visit his cousin still his responsibility.
Don’t let that client spook you with his aggression.

If you really want to go back to that hotel l would just call them and explain he was visiting you. If you don’t want to return then just ignore him.
I'm glad I got all the Cynthia Payne books before the prices rocked to sky high.

Why does he think that visiting somebody in the hotel would make any difference as to whether he owes the parking fine anyway? If I park on a double yellow line and get a ticket it doesn't make any difference why I did it ???

He is just trying to blackmail you so you pay the fine or give him a free service. The hotel will not care whether he was visiting or not as a car driver and owner it is his responsibility to check parking signs.

Most of the time if you got a fine and stayed at the hotel if you contact them with proof of your booking they usually cancel it for you as it has happened to me twice when the device never registered properly and the reception put the wrong number in.

If it was me i would just say sorry you got a fine but don't blame me for you not checking your own parking with the signs that are placed in the carpark then block the prick.

Quite a few of these parking eye carparks you now have a choice to pay on a app in the carpark rather then registering by reception desk.

I explained to him first politely that I'm sorry this happened, but it's his carelessness not mine and he should just take responsibility for his mistake. But he's an idiot and it only hurt his pride and now he's claiming he is going to show them our messages.

What I'm slightly worried about is that he actually kind of has a proof - I mentioned in a text messages that it's a "massage with ending service" before sending him my room number with detailed instructions how to get to the room. I just never predicted that someone would be such an idiot to use it against me for silly reason like that.

I could just deny it, but if he's stubborn enough to make the staff check the camera they will see that he actually entered my room at that time. It sounds far fetched, but it was only few days ago. I worry the hotel staff might actually really want to help him and check the camera. And then, worst case scenario - it might be considered "antisocial behaviour" or illegal business on premises and I get banned from my favourite chain or worse  :-\
I actually don't really know what happens when hotel finds out? Can there be consequences?

Oh and he's doing this because he claims he won't get a ticket if he proves if he was actually at the hotel at that time. I don't know if that's true or not.

As you should know by now, I'm not living in the UK, so my opinion counts less than nothing in this case!
But, having often stayed in 5-star Hotels, where parking restictions for non-guests are in place, I'd say that if it was a genuine mistake it could be solved at the Reception, where your client could explain his version of what happened.
Otherwise, if he was just trying to avoid paying the parking-fee, he'd face reality and get to an agreement with the Hotel.
In any case, you shouldn't be taken into this process!

I think it sounds a bit like fearmongering to try push you into the fine but as you know, it was his responsibility, not yours. I’d say just ignore him but for future, I never give a room number via text, they have to call me when they’re nearby or on the right floor to get it.

I think that only applies to guest who are staying at the hotel, not guests of guests if that makes sense?

This is why on check-in most hotels I've stayed in ask for my car reg number, or if it's a partner/regular client who arrive after me I ask them to leave their details with reception.

I would think most hotels that charge non-residents for parking would do so no matter why you're visiting the hotel, be it the leisure facilities, a conference or the restaurant... simply proving you set foot in the hotel would be meaningless without him being names on a reservation. The fact that his car was parked there is proof he was there xx

Why does he think that visiting somebody in the hotel would make any difference as to whether he owes the parking fine anyway? If I park on a double yellow line and get a ticket it doesn't make any difference why I did it ???

Quite a few years ago a hotel who had signs about guest only-must register but didn't actually have a parking system, suddenly acquired a parking system. I had reason to visit for a booking (have occasionally stayed there for personal reasons), did what I usually did, received a ticket. Looking online I could see many guests complaining about this sudden change in their reviews, basically lots of guests had been caught out. I phoned the hotel explained I had met a friend there, they empathised/recognised the change had not been communicate well and promised to arrange for the ticket to be cancelled. I received a ticket reminder, phoned hotel again, this time they stopped it.

On next return to this hotel I found huge very obvious signs both in car park, at front door and all over reception.

If I'm working or meeting a client in a hotel I always check the parking arrangements and advise the client, some do the same for me on arrival, but frustratingly some have given me duff information. Sometimes these have been clients who make a big fuss, claim to be concerned about my welfare, want to do whatever is best for me. Anyhow my car my responsibility which is why I take it seriously.

My advice for the client is phone the hotel, tell them he didn't realise was meeting a friend for coffee, got distracted, talking, very sorry can you rescind this. This might work.

Presumably he is in a situation where he is happy to broadcast to friends and family that he uses escorts?  Further responses from you are likely to send communications downhill.

The purpose of the visit is irrelevant to a Parking Charge Notice, unless it’s a reason that might incur sympathy, no sort of business meeting will. [removed] and I am sure other hotels don’t manage their own parking, if you don’t tap in your Reg No, they can’t help and have notices displayed to inform guests.

You have apologised, if the hotel management want to take if further with you they will see a steady stream of visitors to your room, the worse they can do is cancel future bookings.

Thanks guys, at this point I don't care if this dummy gets a fine, I was just a bit paranoid that he will get me in trouble with the hotel because of it. The more I think about it the more silly it gets. But it's true I shouldn't send my room number in a text, so lesson learned.

Something similar happened to me when they didn’t register at the reception desk, in the end he called the hotel to see if he could be excused because he didn’t realise he had to register and they let him off. Hopefully he’s just using empty threats to scare you into paying it for him, I don’t know if the staff will care that much to have to scroll all the way back through days or weeks of cctv
