How much of a deposit for travel abroad?
« on: 16 July 2010, 08:51:01 pm »
Again, I lean on the wisdom of SAAFE women! I saw some related threads, but nothing specifically on how much to ask for as a deposit.

I will ask for the plane ticket in advance, but should I ask for a deposit for time as well? How much? 50%? 25%? And if it's a lot of money (more than I need in AW credits or Amazon for the next year!), how should I ask for it? I don't yet have one of those fancy pre-paid credit cards.

I have only travelled once with a client. I arranged it so that he booked an hour with me where he gave me the money for my ticket as I did not want him having all my personal details. I then did not take any more money until I was at the airport where I had the whole fee upfront and promptly paid it into the bank at the airport. This stops any of the hassle getting the money at the end when he realises he has overspent a bit and is short of cash.
Truth is far more important than what one wants to hear. With truth there is no us and them or colour or religion there is just fact

Fifty percent upon booking, payable in cash, fifty percent on arrival, payable in cash is what I would consider necessary. My fee would not cover flights, meals or anything else, as they are the clients expenses. I would also need to do a security check unlike a normal booking, I would want a place of work and at least one other form of identification. Sounds harsh, but there we go.

[Psst you pressed "quote" instead of "modify". Edited to fix. - Anika]

I would suggest Paypal, as they are adult work friendly now. I have all of my deposits sent via a link on my website. I suggest getting a Premiere account with them, because with a  personal account your personal details are sent to them in an email. With a business account, they only get the business name. And make it something TOTALLY unrelated to escorting for the sake of the clients. Mine is a few letters with Inc. after it. A new service called Obopay just sent me an email. They seem pretty cool, as they make the sender pay the extra fees for sending money, which is kind of cool. I think Paypal takes a percentage. I just got a $1000 deposit, and I got $970 and some change.

A prepaid card would be advisable, but they can disable the funds if you get too many deposits. I have a friend right now that's waiting on Green Dot to send her a check for a deposit she got from a friend. But she used them in place of cash. That is not advisable.

I have a Paypal merchant account, which also hides personal details from anyone sending you a payment - you just pick a neutral-sounding name. I hardly ever use it because of the fees and tend to go with Amazon vouchers instead, but even so I can't find anything in the T&Cs that has changed regarding their prossie-friendliness. The Acceptable Use Policy still states:

Prohibited Activities

You may not use the PayPal service for activities that:

2:      relate to sales of (a) narcotics, steroids, certain controlled substances or other products that present a risk to consumer safety, (b) drug paraphernalia, (c) items that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity, (d) items that promote hate, violence, racial intolerance, or the financial exploitation of a crime, (e) items that are considered obscene, (f) items that infringe or violate any copyright, trademark, right of publicity or privacy or any other proprietary right under the laws of any jurisdiction, (g) certain sexually oriented materials or services, or (h) ammunition, firearms, or certain firearm parts or accessories, or (i) ,certain weapons or knives regulated under applicable law

If anyone can supply more information about a policy change, I would be very grateful but it looks very much like business as usual to me  ???.

As far as I am aware if Paypal suspect that you are using your account for any of the activities above, they will suspend it immediately.

They accept adult work where you don't come in touch with clients okay. You just tell them you're a webcam girl and everything should be fine.
