I'm going back to school! (working and studying advice)
« on: 26 April 2015, 05:10:12 pm »
My application for a part-time masters has been accepted :D  Which means I will be a mature student studying parttime over two years from September/October.  Working as an escort will help with paying my fees and I want to continue working whilst studying.  Those who have juggled working and studying, can you give any tips on how to balance the two?  I want to pass obviously.

Also, in terms of "cover" is there anything I should be aware off when I'm on campus (I guess its that risk of someone recognising me)?

TIA

I have studied at a similar level.

I did bump into a client there.

Tutors and other students on the course did know (inconfidence) about my paid work.

I didn't put specific details on my website about the uni or the course I was on.

Nothing bad happened, most people just got on with their own lives.

I did find it difficult to fit in studies around clients, sometimes new clients would try and persuade me to see them even though I'd set time aside for studies.

My advice would be to be strict with your time.

I also found it difficult to answer emails and phones, texts at the same time. I learned to not take my 'work' phone to uni, I have heard of others managing fine but I found it too distracting - I couldn't be all there if I was trying to arrange bookings.

Most regular clients and some new clients fitted into my new schedule, new commitments very easily and many were supportive. The others who were not tended to melt away.

Sometimes clients would expect an immediate answer to texts or emails, and I'd try and answer in snippets of time I had straight after lectures/uni. I also found this was not good, it increased the pressure and enquiries were not always happy if I said I couldn't see them (on an advertised day off).

For me sectioning plenty of time off I found worked best.

I study full-time and escort.

The way I do it, is that I take about 3/4 bookings per week depending on how much uni work I have on. I have exams next week so am not working at all.

I don't display my phone number very often at all during term time, everything is booked in advance via email (which I can use my normal phone to answer while at uni).

I don't advertise my uni or anything else in my ad. My friends know but tutors don't and I've been successful in that so far I believe. I have had a client from my degree turn up and it's something I would refuse in future as I found it very awkward.

Anything else you want to know PM me.

I'd also echo your comment about phone number, I remove mine on the day I'm at uni and also during times of heavy study-load, I find it reduces the amount to deal with. Many guys will email in advance, with phone call to confirm on the day. I too sometimes use my personal phone to answer work emails, but I don't have them pinging through automatically, I access via the browser.

I study full time too, I work via agencies and indi. Put your studies first and be disciplined with your time :).
there's lots of us out there doing both, so you're not alone in your circumstance.

good luck with it all!

All great tips.  I probably wont take my workphone to class.  As for clients around my new schedule, well I have time to prepare and inform current regulars.  A lot to prepare.  Thanks gang!

Not showing your phone number encourages them to email, especially if you get yourself a reputation for replying to them consistently and well.

Mirror - I am a bit tech mad, so everything pings through on my iPhone, it has gotten me a great rep for my communication skills though.

I too have a good communications reputation, however there are times when I want and need to switch off, and times when my friends, fellow students and lecturers want my full attention, not head in phone. When I took my work 'ping through' phone I was spending breaks not socialising, sat in corner organising bookings.
