The TaxRelief Diary for Escorts
« on: 03 October 2008, 06:54:33 pm »
My apologies if I'm breaching the rules by posting this.

As some people may know earlier this year I produced a no-nonsense book-keeping diary for escorts and other sex workers. It covers the current tax year, and runs from April 2008 to April 2009 so I imagine anyone who wants one has already bought one. It has sold steadily without troubling the best seller lists and has just about brought in enough profit to pay for the cost of hosting the taxrelief4escorts website.

The current price is ?8.95 plus postage & packaging. However yesterday I was notified by lulu.com, who print and distribute it, that the production costs will go up from the end of this month by an extraordinary 130%. That means that if the price remains at ?8.95 I will lose money on every copy sold. But I'm not comfortable with increasing the price of a diary which covers a year that we're already half way through.

I'm therefore going to withdraw this year's diary from sale at the end of the month, so if anyone wants one they need to order it (at the current price) before 28 October.

The feedback on this year's diary has been very positive so I want to produce a new edition for next year. The current edition is A5 in size and has a coil binding so that it lays flat which makes it easy to write in. Unfortunately lulu.com have made very large increases in the cost of both coil binding, and A5 size books. I could maintain the current price by switching to a different paper size and replacing the coil binding with a normal paperback binding.

The alternatives I'm looking at are:

Retaining the existing A5 size and coil binding and increasing the price from ?8.95 to around ?14.95

Increasing the size slightly and going for a paperback binding and pricing at around ?9.95

Or a slightly smaller pocket version (Penguin book size) with a paperback binding and maintaining the price at ?8.95

As all the sales are anonymous I have no way of knowing who has bought the current edition, but I'd be grateful for your thoughts on which size you'd prefer. And if anyone has any thoughts on how the content might be improved I'd love to hear them too.

If I'm allowed to post a link to the existing diary it's here http://www.lulu.com/content/1682632

Hi Jolyon

I use your tax relief diary and i think its a brilliant book, makes my bookeeping so much easier,in fact i dont know what i would do without it.

I personally would prefer the book to keep a coil binding as i think it is better wear and tear wise, ive no problem with size being decreased or increased as long as content stays the same. I think its very informative and easy to follow in its current format.

A price increase wouldnt concern me,i would quite happily pay more, anything upto ?20.00 would be fine with me,i think its well worth it for all the hassle my diary spares me!

Is seeking a different supplier not an option Jolyon?

Possibly.

The reason I use lulu is that they are a print-on-demand supplier so they only print a book when someone places an order. That avoids the perennial problem with low volume books of having to hold stock and hoping it sells. It also avoids me having to get involved in having an internet storefront.

They are based in the US (although the books seem to be printed in Spain) and are the most confusing company on earth to deal with so I am looking round for a UK alternative.

I read through your website and it is awesome- I have a career plan for my future that I don't want tarnished by any sort of tax issues in past.  I'm ordering the book now (only started now but the remainder of the tax year will be put to good use!)  following the advice and going legit and going to be positive to keep my nose clean and make sure everything is on the up and up- stupendous idea your book and I hope it keeps printing, I'll order one!

Jolyon would like it to be known that he currently has no net access at home, so cannot respond to any emails sent to the taxrelief4escorts mailbox. If you have an urgent query, you can contact me on caitlin1962@hotmail.co.uk and I can pass it on to him during the working week. :)

Indeed I am. I moved house at the beginning of March and couldn't get my broadband transferred until I'd convinced BT that the previous occupier had indeed moved out.

btw I'm planning an update to the taxrelief4escorts website because there have been quite a few changes since last year, but I'm going to wait until after the Budget, which is unusually late this year on 22 April.
