New client wants to take photo's
« on: 02 April 2009, 03:26:56 am »
Hi, I just got a new client and he said he could take professional photo's of me for free, since i don't have a portfolio.  Does this sound kinda strange to you?  I mean it seems very generous and all but IDK.  Thank You All. ;)

Perhaps he could, but I'd be like no thanks I got it taken care of. Before I had good photos up someone who I had met twice offered to 'fund' a photoshoot so I could get some better photos.

I was ecstatic at first, but then I did my own research and he texted me after I had my new photos how great they looked when he seen on website. In addition, I dont like to have clients take photos of me anyway. My website is right there.

What Joey said. I'd say thanks for the offer but no thanks. Everybody thinks they're a bloody photographer in this business. I'm sure at some point you'll get somebody else telling you that they can do your website for you for a nominal fee. Then all sorts of propositions starting creeping in.
You do realise that unless you bring in your own memory card once somebody takes pictures of you they own said pictures?

Saying that I know of a couple of escorts who've used pictures that their clients have taken. But it's usually the case that they're regular customers and the escort knows them well. As you say he's a new client you have no idea what he's like.

Until you at least get to know him better I'd say no thanks.

Under UK law they still own the copyright on the pictures even then. I think the photographer has to sign some sort of "assignment agreement" to change this. I am no expert though...

Once they've cottoned on you're new you will get offers from the world and his dog wanting to be your photographer, web designer, security, driver (as well as the age-old AW stalwart 'I'm a male escort - shall we do some shared content pictures to help our profiles so I get to shag you for free?'). My advice would be bin the lot - some may be genuine and well intentioned but you can never be sure - I have a trusted client who is going to take some pictures for me, but I would never allow a stranger to do it, and even then the images will be on my memory card.

You will get used to the pile of emails arriving daily offering you the world on a plate (and see the one I posted above which I got this morning - they still think we've come down in the last shower, evidently), the trick is to ask if you're not sure, which you're doing already so I wouldn't worry too much. You very rarely get anything for nothing and I would be very wary of this.
