TB?! WHAT THE HELL?!?
« on: 19 September 2008, 11:40:36 am »
Hey Ladies...

So I've been escorting for 8 months now, and am only planning on working for another 4 (moving back to my home town where I am too well known).  Anyways, other than about 4 issues of the condom accidentally falling off, breaking of having an asshole sneak it off, everything I've done has been safe and so far I'm still clean.  Anyways, a couple of days ago I had to go to the clinic for a TB test for my new job, and today I went back in for them to read my results and it came back POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!

So now I have to go for a chest x-ray tomorrow to see if I have TB infection or active TB.  Regardless, I now have to take a pill, which could possibly severely damage my liver, once a month for 6-9 months.  I've been travelling quite frequently since I had my last TB test when I was 25 (29 now), and the doctor told me I could've easily been exposed during my travels.

But I can't help but wonder if I could've caught it from a client?

Thoughts?  Has anyone dealt with this before or heard anything similar?

I'm so pissed because I'm almost done my phase as an escort and I hadn't caught anything.

Sigh...

Cheers.

I believe TB can be caught by unpasteurised milk and is air-bourne especially if close contact is made with an infected person.

You may not have known due to your immune system fighting it and it remains dormant in the lungs primarily. Yes a chest x-ray would show this and thats probably why you are having it.

I don't believe it can be caught sexually however when someone coughs/sneezes yoir more likely to catch it. I wouldn't worry too much a course of antibiotics over a period of months should sort it.

At least it isn't a horrible sti where you have nasty lesions on your genitals that would be not too nice.

Also one thing to mention being air-bourne means it doesn't have to be a client theres many times when in a queue and someone sneezes etc.

Hi There,

I used to work in a clinic with homeless, IV drug users and you can catch TB by somebody just sneezing in your vicinity. Homeless ,run down people more vuneralbe ( Think Amy Winehouse) .You could have picked it up as easily as somebody standing next to you in Sainsburys with a really bad cough! When i was in the clinic I was always feeling shit.I was immunised for everything i could be .

This is something I had wanted to start a thread about too - immunizations in general not just Hep B from the clinic.
I'd wondered about having say the MMR etc. and going to a Doctor to find out if I could be checked for my immunity levels to anything really but I wasn't sure if it'd be a bit of a mad over the top request to make? Obviously I don't think a Typhoid jab would be necessary but I had wondered about others - just didn't want to seem overly paranoid...

What do you do?

Your local GUM clinic should be able to sort this out for you. Mine don't charge at moment ,but other areas do. Just tell them what you do and they will advice you on everything necessary.

GP can do it but charge and would want to know where you worked. You can always say Homeless/Drug using client environment if you don't want to say anything to GP.

If you have a good ,confidential drugs clinic that covers all aspects of sexual health you can call the lead GP and ask them what is necessary. Some have womens days and you don't have to be a drug user to access. Womens centres and sex worker support groups can also point you in the right direction . Sorry, where are you based?
