Basically i have had 2 childminders so far who at first agreed to work flexible hours (stay-at-home-mum's i interviewed and disclosure checked etc) to look after my child when i'm working. It was all fine at first but then one got a job and the next one has just informed me she doesn't want to work after 6pm.

I still have the expense of my little incall place whilst i'm looking for a new childcarer, but i can't work until i get one (apart from when my daughter goes to her dad's or my sister's for the night randomly once a week)

the problem is most only work 8am-6pm, so do you think i should just make my hours 9.30-5.30 like a 'regular' job? would i even get many clients then? I get most at lunchtime, then 5pm-9pm. Or should i hold out until i find another one? Does anybody else do just a 9-5 and how do you find it? I hate turning work down unless it's my days off.

If you are an escort with children how do you work the childcare aspect?

Hi Anna,
I feel for you as your kids sound young.
Mine are older and can be left for an hour or two as the eldest is almost 18 and she will stay in if I go out, you know, when I go to meet friends!!!
Where are you living? I very much doubt your near me, but if you were, I would be happy to help you out. I don't think you are though.

I don't know really what to suggest to you. A local teenager, a responsible one that is, that needs a bit of college boosing cash perhaps?
A lot of students will babysit for you and contrary to what people think, the vast majority of teenagers are lovely with kids and responsible!
Try contacting a college close to you - those on a childcare course perhaps would do this? You could even help them out in a few years with a reference?
If they are on a childcare course they have to be vetted by the police, even if they are 17, my eldest is on one and she had to have a police report done so you will know you don't have some ass in your house at least if you go this route.
Give it a try, you don't know, you might come up lucky.

Thanks Joanna for the great advice - I hadn't thought of that! Iam going to write an ad and post it on the local college noticeboards on Monday!

yeah i have one under 5, and i live in Glasgow.

It's so hard trying to find affordable childcare in any job, but in this line of work it's especcially a challenge, as sometimes i need to go out at short notice for a booking. I can only give a babysitter about half a day's notice most of the time!

What a genius idea.

It just reminded me that I used to work for a babysitting agency many moons ago when i first lived in london for some extra cash. it was so long ago that no one ever did any checks on me. I'd assumed i would be looking after older sort of kids and was amazed that in the middle of south london there were professional, intelligent, some times Celebrity career women that were happy to meet me for 3mins, tell me what to do for lunch then bugger off for 8hours with me in charge of tiny kids. I assume that these agencies still exist in some parts of the country and i very much presume that they are a heck of a lot more security concious these days. The college thing is a much better idea lol

Was thinking about this as well, from the short notice angle - if a student is on a childcare course, they are not in college all day every day so they have free time.
Sometimes they are in placement, in a school so they work the school hours but that aside, they are flexible with time and students rarely work their minds days in advance so a call from you about child sitting on the day should work out well.
I hope it works out for you.
Oh, yes, Glasgow is a bit of a trek for me to come sit for you, I am in Wales! Ha!

yes i agree i have been a student myself and students usually don't plan much ahead and are usually flexible in time, and can be booked in a few hours notice i would think

i personally use a place on the internet i found, its brilliant but have no idea if its only london based, its called 'sitters.co.uk'....its brilliant service and i always call them and get great sitters who live locally. if they arent in your area maybe you can do an internet search for simiar in your area....xxx

This may seem one of those stupid suggestions and run under the category of DUH!

But here goes: Is there any chance of posting on local(ish) forums to maybe get a group of working mums together to provide child care for each other on alternating days and/or exchange phone numbers for more immediate bookings?
Obviously once the thread is started you could go on to using PMs. Thinking about it you would automatically have a security buddy that way too.
