Sending Cash/Postal Order by post?
« on: 13 March 2010, 01:17:44 pm »
Hello  :)

I have decided put a paid ad on Punterlink with some money I set aside for advertising.

I'm not too keen on using my bank details online though, so I asked them to send me a list of alternative payment methods. They sent an email saying I could pay by postal order/ cash sent to their business address.

Any ideas how to send cash or postal orders?

How do they work?

Do I need to give any personal details?

xxxx

You don't need to provide any personal details to send a letter. If you're wondering whether Plink will need any details from you, you need to ask them.

If you send cash I would send recorded delivery in case it gets lost in the post and put it in something like two sheets of card and a padded envelope so it doesnt look like there is cash in there!

Will they take credit card payment? You can get a prepaid card that you can load up at the post office with cash. In some cases your purchases are insured too.

Postal Orders make me feel old! They are effectively like cheques but you don't need a bank account to buy them. You can have them 'crossed' (as in pre-printed cheques, this is meant to ensure that it can only be paid into an account of the right name) or 'uncrossed'. You can also have them without a recipient's name on, in which case they're effectively cash.

You buy them at a Post Office (paying an extra 50p if you're getting up to ?4.99, an extra pound up to ?9.99, then 10% up to a maximum of ?10), send them off, and the recipient can get their money at any Post Office any time in the next six months.

With these and cash, you stick them in an envelope, and wonder about using recorded/special delivery or not. Unless you've gone for 'special delivery', your compensation should they go missing en route is limited to 100 times the cost of a first class stamp.. and it doesn't cover cash or uncrossed Postal Orders.

Postal Orders are your safest bet really. Never send in the post what you can't afford to lose, then it's not too much worry for you.
