Street map has my home location (kinda)
« on: 17 August 2011, 09:49:47 pm »
A regular told me that when he did a search of my working name online and I came up on street map. So I did a search myself  and sure enough there I am. The weird thing is I only work from hotels, none of which are near my home address, and yet on street map it shows me as being one street away from where I actually live!

I'm certain that I've never used my work name with that address (theres really no reason for me to do so), so I'm completly flumaxed as to how it ended up there. But even more worryingly I dont know how to have it removed.

Anyone else had an experience similar to this? I only live in a small town so its really worrying me.

I got a call once about advertising on Google maps. I thought it was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard and told the woman that lol

I cant imagine why you're on one without you knowing though? I guess its the same as guys adding us to directories without our permission. I got a weird email the other day about being added to something similar..

Here's the thread about the guy who contacted me about it: http://www.saafe.info/main/index.php?topic=6208.msg49674#msg49674

Did the guy say what map it was?

You need to contact google directly, tell them to remove the address. There should be a link on their page somewhere.....

Girls, StreetMap.co.uk is an actual website! There's more to the internet than Google.

Kim, what happens if you just search for the name of your town? It could just be that where you live is close to where the arrow goes when there's no postcode or street name given.

Hi, yeah it was on www.streetmap.co.uk not google.

I wasn't even searching on their site, I just did a google search of my work name in inverted commas and on the second page of results theres a street map link with my name on it.

When I opened up the page there was a big arrow pointing at the street parallel to mine  :o

I know most clients cant even be bothered to read the whole of my profile so I doubt they'll go trawling the internet looking for info on me...but it only takes one nutter.

Anika, I tried putting my town name in and nothing else and the arrow comes up in a different place.  :-\

Do you want to PM one of us with your work name so we can see if we can spot what's going on?

It's very rare for streetmap to come up in name searches on Google, so something interesting is happening.

How horrid, do you use Twitter etc with your working name from a mobile etc.  We often give away our location without knowing.

I'd say it could be something like a work phone showing/logging your location, or do you have a website with your work name and home address in the registered details?

I was wondering this - the location could be stolen from WHOIS information (the name and addressed used to register a domain) or someone from StreetMap.co.uk (or someone else) could have just opportunistically added you to the site after seeing the general area that you're based in on your website, adverts or AW profile etc. Could even have been a punter trying to 'help'.

You really need to contact StreetMap directly and tell them that if they don't remove your information and location, you'll sue them for putting your life at risk.

Wow, this is scary.  OP, as someone said above, have you accessed your Twitter account or similar from a mobile phone?

Hi, ladies. I dont use twitter but I do sometimes update my adultwork profile and my website from my mobile. I wonder if that has some thing to do with it.
I didnt use my current address when I set up my website as I wasnt living there then.

Strangely though when I clicked on the link again today it came up showing an address in a completely different part of the country. None the less I'd rather they didnt have me listed on it at all.

I've emailed street map asking for them  to remove it so heres hoping it gets sorted out pretty quickly  :)

Hmmm. For some reason, Google has discovered that these URLs work (or they would, if I left in the details!):

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?postcode2map?code=post+code&title=working+name

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?postcode2map?code=firstbitofpostcode&title=working+name

The top one is the one you can now see, nowhere near you. The second is the only other one it knows about, which might be closer but only has the first bit of the postcode. If that actually points to one street away, it's a semi-coincidence (postcode areas are quite large). For me, it doesn't have an arrow at all.

Now, the title can be anything you like. See what happens when you click on this:

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?postcode2map?code=SW1A+2AA&title=House+of+Evil

No-one at Google or Streetmap gave that location that title, but it still works as a URL. (It may even appear soon in Google's listings now it's a searchable link!)

So I think that...

I've emailed street map asking for them  to remove it so heres hoping it gets sorted out pretty quickly  :)

.. this was a bit of a waste of time.

Somehow Google picked up on the URLs with the postcodes + your working name. How, I have no idea. It's not the whois for your website (which gives the details of the people you got to host it). Using Google's own tools comes up with nothing. It is possible that someone did a query for you with a postcode, just to see if they could find you but this is clutching at straws.

I do sometimes update my adultwork profile and my website from my mobile. I wonder if that has some thing to do with it.

If it does, various people are going to get seriously sued because of the privacy implications!

Who does know your working name and postcode area?

Hi, thanks XW5.
No one knows my work name and my current address other than myself. I didn't realise that the one near my home address only has the first part of the postcode, I suppose that's not too bad.

As I dont show my face in my pics I doubt anyone would be able to connect me with my work name. Not a clue how to get rid of those URLs now though.
