South Kensington or Camden Town as permanent location?
« on: 19 September 2022, 07:10:29 pm »
hiya, been offered two apartments to live/work from, one in south ken the other in Camden Town. Both nice studios, close to tube station, not crazy expensive but location wise I don't know which is better for work. In the past anything near kings cross has proven great work wise but Camden is a tad more further up so not sure if it's good.

Which one would you pick? I need to make a decision soon.

Thanks,
ana

I think South Kent is better however Camden is very busy area just a bit north.

Hi Ana,

If I were you, I would go to South Kensington 100% (I'm a bit biased because I have my flat in that area). In my opinion, South Ken is a bit more "in the middle" than Camden which is a bit further from the centre. As well, it's a richer area so potentially richer clients. It's a very well connected area (Piccadilly line + district and circle lines). The borough is very nice, you're close to many museums, restaurants, shops, so very pleasant to live there, very good atmosphere.
This is my personal opinion but I also feel safer in South Ken.

I think it really depends on what you're looking for as well in terms of clients and lifestyle, like I think Camden would attract younger clients such as student, musicians, people with alternative styles from different backgrounds when South Ken will get you more older British people (even though I feel that if a client really wants to see you, they would make the effort to travel to you regardless of the area you are in), however I feel that a lot of clients would feel more comfortable going to South Ken than Camden.

I'd also go for South Kensington. There's a higher foot flow in that area thanks to the museums etc., and probably wealthier clientele.

If you can afford l would try and take both. Alternate between the two. In my opinion business better if you are in more than one area. I did that a few years ago in Scotland when l had two apartments. I rented the other out when l was not using one and managed to cover rent on both.
I'm glad I got all the Cynthia Payne books before the prices rocked to sky high.

Both are very good locations.  Whichever you decide your success will depend on how well you advertise, customer service etc etc normal stuff.  Also think about where you WANT to live and be around too  :)

When I worked in Camden, v close to Camden Town station I was very busy and would also get a lot of guys that came into London via Kings Cross so I wouldn't rule it out.

I couldn't agree more, but I've only worked in West London once and loathed it so much I left early. I also don't know anybody who was particularly busy there unless they were prepared to work late nights which I don't do, and the punters were awful; patronising, whiny, entitled and such bloody hard work, wealthy or otherwise (and provided they can pay my prices how much they have in the bank is of no interest to me).

Even more so if I was going to live there too, Camden would win hands down :)

Yes, I actually felt really good about working in Camden as well as it was where I used to go as a kid and teen almost every weekend, so it was a bit of a dream really! Was great walking the streets in the evening and then heading to my local after work, it was fab :')

I’ve worked in Camden and Kensington area …I prefer Camden area as the client seemed to be nicer and were more fun.

That's not the only consideration though, is it? I made a lot of money in Jersey, but I'd rather stick wasps up my arse than live there.

That said, if I had the choice between there and South Ken I'd have to sit down and think it over.
