April turned out to be my best month of the year so far and now I'm away for two weeks thank god, I more than earned the break. I easily surpassed my already extremely healthy earnings total from January, which was my goal for the month.
Extra advertising was my secret this month, I don't use AW so I rely on other directories etc. and so paying for premium advertising when I thought it was going to be quiet meant I doubled my usual earnings for the month, which are already quite high. Yes I spent quite a bit on the advertising but I made it back and then some.
I intend to do that every month now so hopefully I'll never experience a dead time again, quiet I can handle... dead oh no that I cannot handle. Is this your secret too ParisB? I rarely see you complaining about it being quiet so I'm guessing you splurge on advertising when necessary too 
Generally yes , I tend to put myself on most sites in my area and then extra ones when I tour
It can sometimes take a while for the adverts to kick in start working but overall they tend to pay off
I also put my tour dates on my extra adds as well even if they aren't in that location as guys do travel
Some adverts work better in some places than others but after a while you get to know what works well
You might find that you only need to advertise every other month rather than every month once you tweet it all
You will still get quite days/periods but as a rule they won't be as quiet if you were not advertising - if that makes sense
So on the days where you would be dead /no bookings ect you will generally get work from other adverts
A good friend who is normally super busy, rarely gets TW or hagglers has put herself on a new directory in the past week and has been getting loads of TW and idiots calling which I think she is attributing to this particular directory as she rarely get t/w and idiots calling
So it can be a bit of trial and error at first and a bit of tweaking adverts till you get it right
