Side Effects from PrEP
« on: 23 December 2021, 10:10:42 pm »
For ladies who take or have taken PrEP.

Did you have any side effects? I've heard mixed reports.
I take quite a few pills for other issues but I don't want to take something that will make me feel ill.

Have tried, didn’t finish the pack as I couldn’t carry on due to drowsiness and intense nausea shortly after starting.

I know somebody who took it they sometimes would feel sick and get headaches but another time they started taking it they got nothing.

I have heard though if this is directly for work purposes and you offer bareback sex you need to have regular kidney tests.

Thanks, ladies, I have heard mixed reports but I'm going to trial it the last week in January, when I'm not working and see how it affects me. I've already been cleared to start it re kidney function tests so I'll see how it goes.
Thank you to those who replied x

I have not taken Prep but I have taken PEPse for a month after a client tried to penetrate me anally without protection. It is a drug for people to take after they have (or in my case may have) been exposed to HIV which should stop them catching it, and it involved taking pills twice a day for 30 days (I think).

The nausea was absolutely horrendous, I could barely eat and lost weight during the 30 days. There is an amazing nurse at my local GUM who deals exclusively with sex workers, so I contacted her about the nausea and she prescribed me anti-hermetic tablets for me to collect the same day. These are morning sickness tablets often prescribed for pregnant women. They did help a lot. It was a struggle to get to the end of the 30 days but I didn't consider stopping with the medication as I felt I was lucky to have (free) access to it in the first place.

I've been on PrEP both long term and short term.

When I first began taking it, I felt nauseous in the morning time and would frequently throw up bile for a few hours after waking up (imo, eating a bit helps to calm this down). This was the only real side effect I had. After about a week, I no longer had any issue.

The official advice is to take it around mealtime as this will reduce nausea, which I have found to be true. A lot of nurses recommend taking the pill every night before you sleep as this may allow you to "sleep off" the negative side effects - I found this NOT to be the case. Taking the pill at night only made me more sick in the morning whereas taking the pill in the morning or daytime would drastically reduce nausea. I don't believe PrEP has any interactions with common over-the-counter anti-nausea medications, though I can't attest to how effective these would be in curbing some side effects personally.

Also if you'd prefer, you can dissolve PrEP in water, grape or orange juice and drink it that way. Hope this helps!

Oh thank you GS.
I'll be taking it when I'm off for a week so fingers crossed it's not too bad.

I've started taking it and have had no side effects at all plus I feel protected.
I hope this helps anyone who might be thinking of taking the medication.

KPB Glad you're have no side effects. Good to know, I'd seen some SW say they take it constantly. Thank yo, I only looked into it in detail when you mentioned it. :)

Yes, Salty, it's best taken consistently to give complete protection. I wasn't going to take it but a couple of my friends have started taking it with no ill effects either.

One friend in particular keeps catching oral gonorrhea and as she said, it just takes one person with HIV and her career is over. I think she feels she is particularly susceptible.

I don't want to offer OW as it doesn't fit into my marketing and what I enjoy, personally, so I feel more protected.

With other STDs we can get treatment but HIV is a career killer and a life sentence. I think it's wonderful it's available on the NHS now and am so grateful.

The modern treatments for controlling HIV are such that it's no more of a bind to live with than diabetes and many people's viral load is so low that they're not infectious to others, but because it's sexually transmitted the stigma is (and no doubt will stay) alive and kicking. But each to their own - if this is available on the NHS to people who are not in any high risk group for HIV then I'm sure somebody somewhere had a good reason to think that was an appropriate use of public funds.

The chances of getting HIV from oral are miniscule though. I could understand taking PrEP if you were offering clients bareback vaginal and/or anal sex, but personally I wouldn't want to take what are pretty strong drugs just on the offchance. Especially as, as Amy points out, it's no longer a death sentence and good treatments are available.

Can men take those drugs too?
I'm glad I got all the Cynthia Payne books before the prices rocked to sky high.

I think it is given to you regularly if who prescribes it knows you offer bareback sex as a job so i suppose that makes sense if you offer that service that you can get it. There has been women that actually advertise they take PREP because they do bareback sex.
