Title: Should I retire: Bored and fed up of the job
Post by: LadyBelle on 17 October 2014, 04:43:41 pm
Hi

So, I dont want this to sound like a moaning post, but I wanted to check to see if it was just me who feels like this or whether its a common thing.

I used to be the top performing girl at one of Londons best agencies. But as time as gone by, I have lost interest in the job and lack enthusiasm for it. But then again I feel down about life in general.

I am bored with clients, bored of waiting for the phone to ring and would much rather have a stable 9-5 but of course the money is less and also I m worried about not getting a job.

I feel really down because I feel like Im not good at this any more when I used to be excellent. I have many positive reviews but they are all from  before when I first started and really enjoyed the job.

What do you think? Stuck in a rut temporarily or time to make a change?
Thanks for reading, sorry to be so down but I really am depressed.

One thing to do is a search for 'burnout', because that sounds like what you have.

How do you get over burnout though?

I know the obvious answer is to take a break but I am only just returning after taking a break. Maybe I returned too soon.

Have you read the links in some of those threads such as the Annie Sprinkle guide and the one from Australia?

Sounds like what was said above.  Burnout.  Take some time off.  Pamper yourself.  Maybe get a part time job doing something you would really enjoy or volunteer somewhere a few hours a week.
Also perhaps try going Indie so you are only working for yourself and not other people.  Its amazing how keeping all you earn can be an incentive.  You also wont have to sit by the phone waiting as you are in control of when you take bookings.  You can then also pick and choose your clients as well.

I would suggest above all else take some time off to just do fun things.  Things just for you.  It helps A LOT.
If you keep working while burnt out and not bothered you will lose the good reputation you have built up so it is not worth it and is better to just take some time out of this job and do things just for you.

I agree; sounds like a classic case of burnout, I've been there myself several times. Take a break, and come back when you feel ready, not when you think you SHOULD feel ready.
If you're hungering for something new and different you could always look for a temporary office job, I've done 9-5 office work for a month on a temporary contract before, its a good way to work out if you'd prefer that to working. I had a really bad burnout and it was 2 months before I wanted to start escorting again- the trick is to listen to yourself. Sounds simple I know but I went back to work to early a couple of times just because I felt like a week or two should be long enough when it wasn't, there is no set time. That's down to you.
Good luck, hope that was some help!

Hi LadyBelle, it does sound like a burn-out, I've had my fair share of them and I think they're inevitable in this line of work..
You said you're just back from taking a break though, how long have you been back?
After a break I don't get straight back into it with great enthusiasm like I had when I very first started, the thrill of the
money, the job etc. are nothing new anymore, so it takes (me) a while after a break to get back into it, and to get back
on top form..
Maybe give it some more time, see how you feel, and if you're still hating it, maybe it is time for a career-change..
Good luck :)

If you'd prefer a 9-5 sure go for it. But of course it's not as simple as that, you have to adjust to reduced pay & having a boss etc & who knows how long it will take to get a job.

Maybe you just work 1 or 2 clients a week while you look for jobs & only take adult work bookings so your not sat at your phone. Don't feel down that you can't quit immediately, be happy that your finishing a job that your not into soon & that your making the steps to make it happen. What helps when you have a job you don't like is to write down 3 things you liked about work today or just the day in general. There is always something! Got me through my retail assistant days.

It happens in every job, some call it the 7 year itch.  We always want more and something more diversified.  It makes perfect sense, you moved to the next level.  You can successfully combine several activities, you just have to think how you are going to do that.
