Should I be worried?
« on: 15 August 2019, 06:22:29 pm »
My next door neighbour has just had a cctv camera put up outside there premises. It's not looking towards my house but could potentially see people walking down towards my way...not sure what to think!

Hi Helen
You don't need to justify yourself to the neighbour with the cctv should they mention any thing to you about your visitors it's none of their business unless a crime is committed and seen on the cctv
Has the neighbour been a victim of crime recently is that why the camera is being put up?

Hi Sugar.... No it's a business not somebody's home. Its not pointing in my direction so hopefully it'll still be ok just hope it's not one of those swivelly cameras that goes all the way round and see everything but don't think it is still abit worried though :/

I say this from experience of having this at home, and where I worked in the past, people only really look at what the cameras have recorded if there is a problem, such as a burglary, someone trying to break in, so you have nothing to worry about.  If there is an issue they will be focused on what is happening on their property and not yours

Hi Helen

I know it's unnerving but the business near you are NOT allowed to use the CCTV recordings to spy on you or your visitors.  The use of CCTV recordings is strictly controlled and comes under the Information Commissioner's Office (Data Protection Legislation).  Have a look at gov.uk there are lots of useful links for further information.  If the CCTV is impacting on your privacy you can have a word with the business and ask them to restrict the area it covers (this can be done by moving the camera).  If that fails have a word with the Information Commissioner's Office for some advice.

Lots of people would object to intrusive CCTV surveillance irrespective of what their jobs are so don't let your work put you off insisting on your privacy.

Good luck in getting this sorted out.

I have this problem with the apartment I am renting. I have a private entrance to my apartment. Next door neighbour has security cameras on the garage and entrance to their mansion (they are filthy rich). They can see people that come into mine, although the cameras are not pointed directly at my door. I have had my apartment for a month, I  just ignore it, the cameras were there when I decided to rent the place. Punters don't notice the cameras. I see 2 a day, sometimes up to 5.  I don't think the cameras are monitored 24/7 Helen, even with a business, like Domme said, don't worry, you are very low volume.
