Advertising -- how far would you "stretch the truth"?
« on: 25 August 2016, 12:42:36 am »
I have a friend and we often help review each others ads.  She is a beautiful young latina, fairly heavy accent, gorgeous dark brown/black hair, olive skin.  She just showed me her new ad.  The title is "sweet southern gal."  Ummm, okay?  Business is slow and she's looking for another angle.

I'm trying to talk her out of this because while I completely understand shaving off a few years I think she's going to get clients who are expecting some Southern Belle type (we are in the US).  Her pics have her face blurred and you can tell her hair color but her skin tone doesn't show up that well.

I told her I was going to post the question here and she said she'd be interested in the responses.  Am I missing something or do any of you see why I think she's setting herself up for some unhappy men at her door?  She's stunning but if they want a Southern Gal she does not fit that bill.

Thanks in advance,
Mandy

In my opinion adverts should be as accurate as possible.

I agree. Around here, bait and switch tactics are incredibly common, and it's really unfun to work with jaded, suspicious clients that B&S creates.

It's possible to be a 'sweet southern gal' without being a 'Belle' - but if she wants to use that phrase, being a bit clearer about how southern would be a good idea to avoid surprises.

(Now being reminded of an Andy Bell line before doing some country song: 'I come from the deepest South.' 'How deep?' 'The deeper the better!')
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

All that will happen is that she will wind up with clients being disappointed or even angry and in this line of work personally I would want to avoid as much drama as possible.
She will also end up with a bad reputation for not being as advertised which will end up with business being even slower.
Best to be honest about yourself and sell the qualities that you do have.

If she talks like Scarlet O'Hara, her race shouldn't matter. However, you say that she has a hispanic accent and that's just weird and misleading. It would be like me saying that I'm from Liverpool and have a Scouse accent.

Assuming she speaks to them on the phone before booking then I guess it will be apparent that she's not whatever a "Southern Belle" so what is the point?

Lies should be things that add to your appeal and can't be easily disproved. So, things like "I'm a horny bisexual who just can't get enough sex!" Still a bit pointless, but harmless.

Getting a "bait and switch" reputation is bad for business so stretching the truth to be outright lies is not a great idea. I prefer to market in a way that highlights your good points as a focus so people know exactly the type they are getting. I don't have the huge boobs bikini model body nor the long legs of a fashion model so I market myself as petite and cute. You need to figure out what your selling points are and the type of clients who are into your type.

Thanks Ladies!  She's a great girl and I know how it feels when business slows but I think her ad, the way it was written, is going to conjure up and image that isn't accurate and raises the potential for complaints.

I came up with a bunch of adjectives that I think do fit her and will draw in client's attention. With words like "firey" and "exotic" you can alter your behavior and looks to fit them.  They suit her and sound alluring.

Here's hoping that business picks up for everyone now that the kids are back in school!

Thanks again,
Mandy

Yep, second that, otherwise walkers will occur and they will have the perfect excuse to do it too.

If she's Latina she should definitely play that up! As gross (personally) as I think it is, it's a fetish for a lot of men and she should totally tap into that market. I'm Asian and I heavily use this in my marketing to make myself stand out. Any kind of 'exoticness' is a selling point and there are so many potential clients out there who specifically seek out something that they consider different.
