Agency or advert site?
« on: 29 January 2008, 07:17:19 pm »
I've just got off the phone with a nice lady from Candy Escorts - all sounded tempting (?high rates, prepaid taxis etc) until she told me that the 'basic' fee for joining was ?219 for 12 months rising through ?319 to ?400-and-something for their Gold package (where you can have 6 photos!). On closer inspection of the T&Cs, this turns out to be not a 'true' agency an advertising site for independents (it states somewhere that escorts are self-employed and not employees of Candy escorts). I'm confused - I don't mind paying for advertising but this seems ridiculous - I can get my own site for ?150, have as many photos as I like and set my own rates to boot! Anyone know anything about them? You also need to register and have a password before you can even look at the profiles which she said was for our security, but frankly just looks to me like putting a barrier up to potential clients.

Short answer? Any "agency" that asks for money up front in the guise of "registration" is to be wholly avoided, imho.
Admittedly I don't have that much experience with an agency, but for the short months I was with one in the early days, they didn't charge me a dime. They took a couple of pictures to put on their website, sent me out on jobs and I'd pay them ?30 from each fee into their back account after the job. That was it. No doubt it's more sophisticated than that now, but I still say that any agency that asks for money up front is to be avoided.

that just screams we have something to hide, will put clients off etc

a quick google will show you hundereds of directories that are viewable by anybody, personaly i would avoid any that dont do it that way

Think I knew the answer anyway really - I was looking through the agency sites last night as I'm having a hell of a time with timewasters at the moment (which is starting to get me down a bit) and thought that maybe joining an agency would help sort out some of the wheat from the chaff! I know that you should never pay an agency an upfront fee but they're smoother operators on the phone than I realised and I can now see how many normally intelligent and sensible people have been conned into handing over their money. All I can say is watch out folks (next time I'm having a low moment I'll remember to shut off the computer and open the fridge instead!)

Virtually all agencies will say you're self-employed (they don't want the legal responsibilities that come with having you as an employee). I still think this is dubious (an escort-agency working relationship will rarely pass most of the usual tests used to distinguish between employed / self-employed status, like being able to send someone else to do the work in your place) but there is an interesting case saying otherwise in the even more extreme context of a brothel.

But here, yes absolutely: scam, scam, scam.

The 'we will only show your ad to people who jump through hoops' is a particularly annoying scam: not only are they an expensive ad site, they're an incredibly crap place to advertise, but they may well do enough to avoid being successfully sued by victims.

There was a fascinating report on Radio 4's Today programme this week about similar problems with scam acting/modelling 'agencies', complete with a campaign to ban upfront fees entirely.

Your own site would cost you about ?3 a year to register and it's quite possible to do your own without paying someone fifty times that much to do it for you.
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

Hi Hun

Yep what they all said, any mention of handing over money...run a mile.

Moonfruit do a nice easy self do web site (from ?2.99 per month), or there are other lovely ladies who can do one for you at a cost.

Ive done a couple of sites for other ladies(via moonfruit) im very happy to help out if you need me too, (free of course.)

Hi there

Thanks for all the help folks - I didn't know about moonfruit and have already got miradesign working on a website for me - the firm is recommended on the saafe main site which is one of the main reasons I chose them (not to mention the nice sites). I have no idea where to start with the internet and am not really interested enough to learn, I'm afraid - although I do appreciate I should probably make a bit more of an effort. I'm hoping it'll be up by the end of the week - I've just had some photos done and feel like it's all coming together; my main job now is writing the text but I'm hoping it won't be too much of a trial! I will definitely recommend moonfruit to anyone who asks though - it does look almost idiotproof!

Miradesign are good amy, Ive used them for my site.  Great for after care service too.

Would recommend that you read the main Saafe site for info on advertising.  Once you have your site sorted there are lots of places that you can advertise it on on the internet, either for free or a small monthly fee.  Lots of girls use sites like this as well as more localised advertising, and some girls just advertise on the internet.

It just depends on how you wish to promote yourself, and how much work you are looking for.

Thanks Penny!

I have been exchanging emails with Miradesign over the last three or four days almost non-stop - I don't think she ever sleeps! The designs she has done are really nice and she has taken time and trouble to explain to me the word processor so I can edit the text etc and change colours/buttons and things around to the nth degree to get it how I want it; I couldn't recommend the service highly enough. I had my (first ever!) proper photoshoot on Saturday and am still recovering - I honestly didn't realise it was such hard work! I have looked through sites like Punternet, UK Belles, Captain 69 etc and am going to try most I think, but I might still keep up some local ones as I have had some good bookings while I've been starting off. We get a lot of conferences in Scarborough - how cheeky would it be to buy an advertising spot in their 'visitor's guide' (they all get sent one)? Think that one might get me in bother, somehow. AMY x
